Did Paula Hawks actually look at the Dem Party campaign finance report before she said that?

Paula Hawks was in the Pierre Capitol Journal today, telling a whopper of a fish story, leaving readers to wonder “did she actually look at the Dem Party campaign finance report before she said that?”

Paula Hawks, the newly elected chairperson of the South Dakota Democratic Party, has announced three party programs to be rolled out this summer.

Calling like-thinkers ‘progressives,’ Hawks reminds people, “Unlike Republicans, we’re not bankrolled by big-money special interests. We’re funded by grassroots donors.”

Read that tall tale here.

That’s not very accurate. And the Capitol Journal should be ashamed for their superficiality on this one.  Just read the latest FEC Report from the State Democrat Party from just last week:

State Democrats receive a monthly stipend from national democrats to keep the doors open, unless they’ve decided to forego that cash. And they receive significant labor union funding.

Of their total receipts last month ($47,262.32), South Dakota Democrats took in $12,941.17 from the National Dem party and political committees, alongside $13,365 from Union PACs such as the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, AFL-CIO SD, Electrical Workers PAC, South Dakota EPIC (SDEA PAC).

That would be over half of everything that came in.  And this was in a month when they had their annual dinner. It’s far worse in other months.

When Paula Hawks claims State Dems are funded by the grassroots, that’s just a line of nonsense, pure and simple. And maybe the Capitol Journal should report with actual objectivity instead of regurgitating Paula’s talking points.
