Dusty Johnson on Governor’s race: Toby is not that person.

Congressman Dusty Johnson just took Toby Doeden back to school after Doeden tried to tell South Dakota last night, with a red face in a darkened room, the he himself was good and Congressman Dusty Johnson is somehow evil:

“South Dakotans deserve a leader who will bring our state together, who will lead with integrity, and who will demonstrate the value of being a work horse, not a show horse,” a statement sent Tuesday to KELOLAND News said. “It’s pretty clear Toby is not that person.”

Following up with a message to supporters, Congressman Johnson’s campaign noted that the kind of hate that Doeden is spewing is not dissimilar from the hate that was just experienced over in Minnesota. And that Toby’s kind of candidate is not just ugly, but dangerous to our Democracy:

It is said that politics is an ugly business, but this clip from last night is beyond the pale.

Given the tragedy that just occurred in our neighboring state, it’s undeniable that this type of extreme and hateful political talk crosses a line and this type of candidate is dangerous.

Doeden may quickly find that there’s no place for his red-faced brand of unhinged meanness in the race for Governor.

  1. I’ve come to the conclusion that Toby is a replicant, ala Blade Runner.

“The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long – and you have burned so very, very brightly, Toby.”

To paraphrase the last scene in the movie, Toby’s campaign in May 2026 will be like big old fat, scowling tears in the rain.

  2. Good to see Dusty call Toby out by name. There are so many involved in our current state politics that have no business there (about half of the state legislators come to mind). They need to start being called out explicitly. We have been nearly overwhelmed by individuals who are incompetent for the job, unfit for the office, and unserious in deathly serious times. 2026 needs to swing the pendulum back.

    1. Call them out by name and hold them to actual policy and a plan to implement it. Not platitudes and catch phrases. For example: how are they going to fund our state government by cutting property taxes and opposing economic growth all while revenue is decreasing??
I want to hear exactly how this candidate will do that. Cutting spending is not the answer, the vast majority of our budget is mandated by our constitution.

  3. Toby Doeden’s past social media posts have called for killing people. Horrible and hateful posts yet the legislators and other elected officials who endorsed Toby and make sure everyone knows they are Christians fully support Doeden.

Did we end up with a different version of Hellboy?

  4. I think Doeden could benefit from a fresh perspective with his comms and platform.

Johnson calling Doeden a show horse is indicative of formulaic communications.

How many times has that mud been slinged? What about work ponies? And show horses?

But “Doeden the show pony”, while it brings about some comedic images, means the punch doesn’t land.

All candidates’ early stage barbs notwithstanding, where is all of South Dakota’s money going?

How much money do “we” have?

    And, who is “we”?

So many good issues to work on together.

    Sincerely,

    John

    1. Highly doubtful Doeden will be a threat for whomever the top contender will be for the Governors office. What would not be surprising is that there would not be a shortage of locals and former locals who would step up and publicly denounce Toby Doeden. Those locals could be in print, TV and social media ads.

“Outwork anybody” and the name Toby Doeden will bring many laughs.

    2. Mr. Dale, might it be possible that money is sitting in pockets, just awaiting the right candidate to whom they will open the spigot? There are fat wallets, lounging uncomfortably in back pockets in cafe booths all around the state and in downtown brewpubs in Spearfish, and one or two real candidates yet to announce. These wingnut whackadoodles are in it for our entertainment and nobody except those fellows insaner than most would waste the price of one of your fancy Spearfish coffees on them. The big doggies are yet to even wake up.

It is kinda funny that the Doedenites are getting so much more love right now than the Hanseners and Lemmsings. Probably because Mr. Toby is spending some of Mr. Dales’ money. Those two fellows are like Oscar and Felix.

Note grudznick thinks Mr. Hansen is probably more like the Felix one of the pair.

  5. I have found that liars tend to accuse other people of being liars. Thieves call other people thieves. Cheaters call others cheaters. And evil people call other people evil. I believe it is called transference.

  6. Welcome to the dance Toby. How you handle this heat will detarmine whether you have the ability to handle the heat of the governors mansion.

    Great response Dusty.
