Johnson Applauds USDA Announcement on Moving Prevent Plant Harvest Date to September 1st

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.) today applauded the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) announcement which would adjust the November 1st harvest date for cover crop on prevent plant acres to September 1st.

“I’m thrilled USDA acknowledged concerns from producers, recognized the need for flexibility on prevent plant acres, and acted swiftly,” said Johnson. “This simple change will provide much needed relief and will allow producers to get the feed they desperately need for their cattle. I’m grateful this administration listens to producers and South Dakotans when disasters hit.”

Last week, Rep. Johnson and Rep. Angie Craig, introduced the bipartisan Feed Emergency Enhancement During Disasters Act (FEEDD Act), which would create an emergency waiver authority for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to allow producers to graze, hay or chop a cover crop before November 1st in the event of a feed shortage due to excessive moisture, flood or drought. With this waiver, producers would not have to take a further discount on their crop insurance.

The FEEDD Act received immediate support from 28 bipartisan cosponsors in the U.S. House of Representatives and more than 17 national Agriculture groups. On Wednesday, Johnson spoke on the House Floor to continue his campaign to move the November 1st harvest date.

  1. I am impressed with the speed & effectiveness our young congressman showed on this timely issue. Being in the minority, building coalition and changing minds is a skill set his prior opponents do not have.

  2. Yes, getting 17 national ag groups to so quickly endorse his bill was key to forcing USDA’s hand. Nice work.

  3. More socialism for the welfare state. Congratulations to all you “capitalists.” haha
