If you recall my post on Monday noting how State Representative Scott Odenbach was among Independent Candidate Karen McNeal’s largest donors through his Liberty Tree PAC, the days since haven’t gone much better.
In an op/ed from the Dakota Scout, Nanny State Representative Bethany Soye authored an article with Indy Senate Candidate Karen McNeal where they jointly attacked McNeal’s Republican opponent for State Senate, Senator Helene Duhamel.
Why? Because Soye doesn’t know how to write legislation that will pass muster in the courts, but insists on it being passed or her opponents are immoral demons? Aside from the fact she thinks that only she is qualified to tell parents how to raise their kids.
Why do we need a couple of carpetbaggers from out of state (Soye & McNeal) telling South Dakota parents how to raise our kids and that being sued over unconstitutional legislation is the way to go? And even worse is that one of them is supposed to call herself a member of the House Republican caucus yet is providing comfort to the enemy?
And giving comfort to the opposition to Republicans is the continuing theme for House members as apparently helping the other team to beat members of your own caucus is the trend for 2024. For another example, check out what a reader pointed out to me.
Remember Karen McNeal’s son, Justin McNeal who ran as an independent? He had some familiar names trying to help him on his way:
After Dusty Johnson had been solidified as the Republican Nominee for Congress in March, on line #4, we have State Representative Jon Hansen signing his name to Justin McNeal’s Independent Candidate petition to run against Republican Dusty Johnson on April 12th. (This also comes after Hansen voted ‘No’ last year on the House Republican nominee for Speaker. )
I also caught Brown County Commission candidate and Aberdeen Right Winger Kyler Dinger on line 7.
Moving to the other side..
“Supposedly Republican” Brown County Commissioner Duane Sutton is line #8 signing a petition for the opponent to Dusty Johnson. On line #9 signing on for a non-Republican alternative to the GOP Candidate we have State Representative Brandei Schaefbauer. We also have Republican D1 House Candidate Christopher Reder showing up below Brandei on the sheet at petition signature line #15.
I imagine it may be kind of hard for some of these people to try to rally people around the Republican Party banner when they might be looking to run for office within their respective Republican Caucuses, coming as it will after they give aid and comfort to the enemy.
I’d love to be a fly on the wall in caucus elections when they get together to try to explain why they’re the best choice to be a part of the leadership team to lead House Republicans next month.
Stay tuned.
Wait so Reder,Sutton and Dinger signed Sheryl Johnson’s petition?
My bad I didn’t read the Justin Mcneil part. But still it is sketchy going against the your own parties candidate.
Typically I would say this is not a good move but after seeing how hard many people including Schoenbeck, Mortenson, yes Dusty johnson, etc worked against them in the primary i will give everyone a free pass.
Come Nov 6th the everyone gets a clean slaight.
Absolutely not. But of course the far right wants a cleaned slate…
“Please forget what asshats we’ve been. We need you to forget we’ve been acting just like the far left, so we can continue to call other Republicans RINOs – please, clean slate!!”
(Insert eye roll here)
Nailed it
You are right! They are using the same playbook as the extreme element of the DSAs which are their cousins. Not all DSAs are that way though but there is a uber left that is in militant lala land.
Was going over the recently updated SD campaign finance report to see who is funding the District 1 and 3 Bad Dream Team. Yikes! Not just hard right but uber off the wall right. Some of those donors are well known locally to be bat***t crazy!
Not only will our public school systems get defunded and decimated but they will turn South Dakota into a Christian version of Iran and Saudi Arabia! While calling it freedom they will be in our houses, bedrooms and the examining room in doctors offices. Hypocritical religious and fanatical, weirdo control freaks.
At least the woke weather modification worked properly during the pheasant opener and start of harvest.
good lord
I got news for you. Commissioner Duane Sutton has been pondering for a long time about switching to being independent following the 2024 elections. He believes that like city elections, county elections shouldn’t be connected to political parties.
Might you remember, Duane also voted against the current abortion law which ended his senate career…
Sutton is a good guy. The GOP would be sad to see him go. Longtime water carrier for the elephant.
Let’s not go after non-combatants, please.
It shows anyone can run with an R behind their names these days. As we see with who signed it Libertarians and Constitutional Party activists that don’t want to put in the work to build their own parties who’s ideas don’t sell and at times scare the heck out of voters can hitch a ride with an R behind their names. Once they sneak past the primary with a win the general is sure bet. Along the way they and their gang pillage and plunder the GOP. The you have the rabid MAGAs too.
No big deal for them to support non-Republicans candidates.
can we get our early ballots back and delete the votes for Jon Hansen? Even though he is unopposed I would like to do that
These people want us to turn into a Saudi Arabia / China government that will provide a firewall for all internet traffic. Only they can deem what and what not, is acceptable. We love big brother….
District 9 has produced some extremist candidates……
They don’t hold a candle to 28.
i’d help helene in a heartbeat, but i got gerrymandered out of district 32, which is a block away from me, and into district 33 where i basically leave the legislative part of the ballot empty because i don’t know or don’t like any of the people. oh well.
So Jon Hansen and Scott Odenbach both want to lead the Republican caucus, even though they don’t support Republican nominees?
Just think of it like the Night of the Long Knives. Anyone who is more loyal to the core principals of the Party than to Hansen and Odenbach must be purged and replaced with room-temperature IQ goons that heed their beck and call.
Time to support Amendment H; these “parties” sure suck in SD.
We’re headed for the Empire of the poorly educated, prejudiced, and superstitious.
Might as well call Helene a Carpetbagger too, she wasn’t even born in South Dakota but California where she also went to college.
I’m pretty sure she was born and raised in Rapid City. While it’s true she went to college at Stanford, she returned to South Dakota to live in 1989.
I doubt if anyone but you would consider her a “carpetbagger”, but most people would consider you a liar.

“. In 1960, she and Bill moved to Stanford, California, where she taught at St. Albert’s School from 1960-61. Jacque then temporarily left teaching to raise her five children as a full-time mother. The family moved to Rapid City in 1967.”

pretty sure Helene was born in 1962…
So, she grew up in Rapid City, went to college out of state and returned to live in South Dakota in 1989.
Still, not what anyone sane would call a carpetbagger.
Soye I could see seeing she’s from Nebraska when to college in North Carolina, but McNeal is from Rapid City. Not sure how the author would call Mcneal a carpet bagger when she was born here, grew up here, and went to college here. Helene was born in California when to college in California, and also worked at a broadcasting agency in Scottsbluff Nebraska before going into the family business. My point is if Mcneal is a carpetbagger then paint Duhamel with the same brush.
