More news out of Iowa on carbon pipeline as Iowa Gov vetoes anti-ethanol measure to stop carbon pipeline

It has been kind of a big week for the Summit Carbon Pipeline, as while some were thinking it might be able to be put down for a ten-count, they’ve bounced back in federal court, where the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals wiped away local ordinances which tried to stop it. (8th Circuit includes SD, BTW)

Only a short time ago Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds delivered a veto to an anti-pipeline law that came out of their legislature.  Sabrina Zenor with Summit Carbon Solutions just issued a statement thanking Governor Reynolds for her decision:

We thank the Governor and her staff for their thoughtful and thorough review of the bill. Summit remains committed to working with landowners through voluntary agreements—just as we have with more than 1,300 Iowa landowners to date, resulting in $175 million in payments. We look forward to continued discussions with state leaders as we advance this important project. At a time when farmers are facing increasing pressures, this project opens the door to new markets and helps strengthen America’s energy dominance for the long term.

And the Governor earned that thanks. The veto message was quite powerful. South Dakota’s leaders should take the time to read it, as the Governor was quite direct with regards to doing business in her state:

HF 639 isn’t just about eminent domain. It goes much further-and in doing so, sets a troubling precedent that threatens Iowa’s energy reliability, economy, and reputation as a place where businesses can invest with confidence.”

Governor Reynolds noted that her state should have a “reputation as a place where businesses can invest with confidence.”

As we watch a couple hundred miles to the west, as some run amok trying to shut down any development in our state, whether it’s pipelines, solar farms or data centers, being a place where businesses can invest with confidence is a message we’re not hearing enough of.

Either we want jobs in South Dakota or we don’t.

    1. Can be, but won’t. It barely passed in the Iowa State Senate, Not enough votes to override from the State Senate. Iowa House vote on the bill was overwhelming,

Also, the Iowa Legislature id adjourned for 2025.

  1. Thank you Governor Reynolds! If only we had the same level of leadership in the Governor’s office of South Dakota.

  2. If Rhoden decides to run for reelection, people shouldn’t forget the good and the rough about Rhoden’s record out the gate. Helped tarnish our state’s reputation of being open for business by not having similar courage to Iowa by just rubber stamping the eminent domain CO2 ban. Veto’d childcare workforce legislation. Also worked against data center recruitment legislation. Seems that cowboy likes to ride the fence and tries to not upset anyone. I’ll give him some grace for what he inherited though. I’m just ready for 2026 to come and go.

  3. PP I’ll answer that question.

No, we don’t want jobs in S.D. Not really. But we are open for opportunity. And photo ops of those existing opportunities that already are established. But nothing new please. Certainly not anything that impacts my freedom.

  4. It will be interesting to see how the chairman of the SDGOP reacts when the pipeline goes through and he finds out he never had the power he thought, and his minions all blame him for not stopping it.

  5. Are we still hoping and praying the Ronald W Reagan Memorial Trickle Down Pipeline of Dreams is going to save us all?
