Apparently last night, it was good to be the king.

Why don’t we hear more talk about Michels for governor? Has he said he won’t run?
Agree. Michels should have more chatter. Remember- Gov. Daugaard ascended from Michel’s position in the 2010 election.
Speaking of the governor, why wasn’t he handing out candy last night from the mansion?
The question is, did Daugaard break the jinx against SD Lt. Governors’ future political ambitions?
Between Abdnor’s election to the US House in 1972 and Daugaard’s ascendency to the Governor mansion in 2010, plenty of SD Lt. Governors, both Republican and Democrat have found the LG office to be the end of the road for them politically.
Think about it, Dougherty, Hansen, Kirby, and Hillard all saw their political careers come to an end after their LG gig even though all of them sought higher office. Two other LGs prior to Daugaard did become Governor, Wollman and Miller, but neither of them could garner their party’s gubernatorial nomination. One (Wollman) lost a primary fight a month before he was to inevitably become governor do to an expected gubernatorial resignation (Kneip’s appointment as the Ambassador to Singapore) and the other (Miller) lost his party’s nomination even though he was the sitting governor who assumed the office do to the death of his predecessor.
Daugaard’s election in 2010 was an oddity in historic terms, but now the question is, is the jinx gone for Michels and other future ambitious LGs?
