Nick ”Man Bun” Weiland to address fellow socialists, noting “Democratic Party in South Dakota on the downtrend”

Will tying a man bun be on the agenda?

According to the Brookings Register this evening, Nick ”Man Bun” Weiland is coming to town to talk to his fellow socialists:

On Saturday, Nicholas Weiland will speak to the rise of Progressive Independents and the chilling effects of neoliberalism on state and national Democrat politics. His talk is hosted by the Democratic Socialists of America Brookings organizing committee and is open to the public.

And..

“With Independents on the rise, and the Democratic Party in South Dakota on the downtrend, we must form a new coalition of progressives that can take the fight to the Republican establishment that has so much unchecked power in this state,” said Weiland, himself a registered Independent who considers himself a progressive and democratic socialist.

Read it here.

What’s he going to give a talk on? “How to get your butt kicked across Sioux Falls in an election because you didn’t campaign, and it’s the fault of Democrats who didn’t support him? Because coming to Brookings to whine about the evils of “neoliberalism” (a form of liberalism tending to favor free-market capitalism) doesn’t sound like a winning strategy for electoral politics in this state.

Somehow, I’m not very worried about Man Bun’s coalition.

Now, or at any time in the foreseeable future.

Update – here’s more about the group that Man Bun is working to organize and promote:

“We are socialists because we reject an economic order based on private profit…”

This is the “Democratic Socialism” that people like Man Bun and Ellee Spawn are claiming to support?

And they basically want to recreate the Soviet Union. Because that worked so well?

  1. If he’d only had the tough mid 6 figure job his dad had on the tax payer dole all those years he’d have some Bernie like credibility.

    1. Where do you think the Democratic Socialists of America – Brookings committee was educated about socialism? High School? College? AOC? Bernie Sanders who owns three homes and whose wife bankrupted a college?

They certainly aren’t searching for the truth about what is happening on the ground within some socialist countries. Eating zoo animals, prostituting out your children for food, collecting drinking water from the sewer and extreme violence does not appeal to me. What could it be that draws the DSA to this way of life?

      1. Educated by Meridel Le Seuer, Tillie Olson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, the New Testament Gospels, the Rule of St. Benedict, the Amish and Hutterite Ordnungs, Thomas Merton, the Old Testament Prophets, Marx and Engels, Ella Deloria, Dom Hélder Pessoa Câmara, and the Buddha, if you really want to know.

  2. “free-market capitalism”

Capitalism is not free-market. Capitalism is a form of blended socialism that uses public private partnerships that gives unfair advantage to certain special interests.

  3. The USSR was NOT a democratic socialist nation. Authoritarian power with centralized planning is exactly what democratic socialists are against. Meanwhile, don’t confuse these kooks with social democrats (ala the ‘Nordic Model’). Gotta say this bunch sounds like a real hoot, though. I can smell the patchouli oil from here.

    1. The USSR was Communist – a temporary and transitionary structure according to Marx – leading to socialism. Temporary and transitionary because Marx realized the people wouldn’t freely adjust to a pure socialist state, they would need a strong man to help them along until we all fell in love with socialism and socialism proved to be so wonderful. History shows us that when countries go this route, the strong man drives the economy into ruin, the population waits in breadlines and generally descends into poverty and despair. No country has ever made it to true socialism – the strong man never gives up power! Democratic socialism is an oxymoron, because we’re no better than a pure democracy with two wolves and a sheep deciding what’s for dinner, only this way the wolves use their philosophy to say they already have a general, societal interest in the sheep, who needs to vote!

  4. The rotten apple didn’t fall far from the rotten tree here. Why doesn’t this drip move out to California to see firsthand how the ideas he seems to like pan out? Better yet, move to France; we certainly don’t need him in America. The stupidity of these people and their lack of responsibility and whining are mind-boggling. I’m certainly glad his daddy didn’t go any farther in politics, and I hope he doesn’t go any farther either.

  5. Move away. Move away. Move away. You say that anytime you’re presented with something or someone different. Where are the best and brightest from SD? Right where you told them to go. Minnesota, Colorado, Oregon, Washington and California. Foolish loser!

  6. Actually, I think we want them to stay, run for office, and run on their ideas and values. Get into Democrat primaries and speak for some disaffected part of the party. Put your ideas on billboards and in flyers
I know, selfish… no Republican would ever need to send me another fundraising letter. They’d get 90% for breathing as an intelligent life form on the ballot

    1. The LIBERAL Republicans that have given South Dakotan’s over 300 million in tax increases over the last three years.

      1. Gov. Noem gave us 51 million in new spending and 90 new state employees. Isn’t state government South Dakota’s biggest employer?

  7. I can teach you how to tie a man bun Pat. But seriously I hope you can make it on Saturday, I know you do not like me all that much but I would not mind meeting you, maybe we can talk about how your party has embraced unfettered capitalism. On a side note how are those Trump tariffs treating the farmers in South Dakota? I hear they will be receiving a socialist bailout soon.

    1. No thank you. Some of us are old enough to remember when socialism was attempted and failed in other countries. Between ideological purges and mass starvation, socialism only managed to kill around what, 100 million people? Some of us have no interest in being added to that tally.

Our system of free enterprise certainly isn’t perfect. But it’s far, far better than the alternative.

    2. Free markets, private property rights, limited government, and individual liberty brings the greatest good to everyone.

Socialism is the creed of slaves.

      1. Sadly the SDGOP Establishment only gives mouth service to those conservative principles. Representative Dusty Johnson is probably the most dangerous progressive in office right now representing South Dakota.

        1. Steve will you be running for Congress? Two from the Corn Palace City competing in the primary unless you run under the Constitutional Party. You could have a grand speech at Lake Mitchell but by golly keep Tara away from that lake!

          1. The city would rather spend millions buying a multi-million dollar home, farm and swamp land.

  8. So how do explain for my above statements Dave? Limited government? I don’t think so.

  9. ‘Free’ can be a mesmerizing word for many people. The current trade war will benefit and boost the U.S. economy.

Look at real GDP reports since the launch of the trade war. From Q4/2018 – Q1/2019, we see a 3.2% growth. This is nearly as high as were experienced under the 8 years with Obama.

The Chinese are frightened and are becoming desperate, they will not win. One example of this is as Trump threatened tariffs on another $300 billion of Chinese goods, Beijing called for a Peoples War against the U.S.

Has anyone received an email update from the AFP? I’m waiting. Can they explain the real GDP growth from years past to present and why mostly positive changes have occurred? Why are they holding back? Well, I think it has something to do with labor mobility and they don’t want to address their position on this particular issue.

    1. Could be attributable to the tax cuts, which consistently show positive short term impacts. This is occurring despite the trade war, not because of it. Look at commodity prices for evidence of this.

  10. No, we don’t want to recreate the Soviet Union. Recreating the Jerusalem Church, though, is a worthy endeavor.

  11. Are you a Christian, Pat Powers? If you are, then you shouldn’t be afraid of Socialism or the faithful resistance to Empire. God is Red, after all.
