  1. Superb! Our state, helmed by smart, prudent leaders, is poised to enjoy a decade of bountiful growth. If we elect candidates zealous to impose a state income tax, we’ll all suffer. Don’t follow Illinois into bankruptcy! A bright, prosperous future depends upon new business investment. That comes if and only if South Dakota remains a beacon of sound fiscal policy.

    1. the state income tax, with no great neutralizing of the higher property tax level we have because of no income tax, would be the “one” of a one-two punch. the second punch of course would be the taking of the federal government’s rope-a-dope charlie-brown-placekick medicare medicaid increase deal. THEN we can outpace new jersey and california on per capita overspending.

  2. In theory, SD could lower property taxes & replace the revenue with a modest income tax. In theory. But experience teaches that the income tax rate would (inexorably) climb. Elected officials are forever discovering new & wonderful ways to spend our money. Meanwhile, the property tax — funding education — will remain constant. This combo leads to greater taxation overall. Moreover, it creates a paperwork problem. Do you enjoy wasting work-hours reading and filling out a state income tax return? Do you want to pay govt workers to file, store, and audit returns? Me neither. The prudent course is STANDING FIRM against imposition of state income taxes, voting against candidates who favor them. Kristi Noem is correct. Taxing income creates a perverse incentive. Instead, let’s REWARD diligent, productive workers who earn raises & promotions. Let’s reward daring entrepreneurs who invest & succeed, creating local jobs. Let’s increase state revenue by attracting investment from bankrupt, high-tax states. Let’s grow the pie, benefiting all South Dakotans.
