President Trump Approves South Dakota Disaster Request

PIERRE, S.D. – Governor Kristi Noem today announced that President Trump has approved the State’s request for a Presidential Disaster Declaration. This will allow federal money to be used to help citizens and local governmental entities recover from property damage sustained during the statewide winter weather and flooding this spring. The President signed the declaration late on June 7, 2019. The state made the request May 22, 2019.

“This is great news for our state as it means that those still recovering from the severe weather will get much needed assistance,” said Noem. “We thank the President for his actions.”

The declaration means FEMA teams will soon be coming to the state to document all damage sustained to both individual and public properties. More details on that process will be announced at a later date.

In May, the Governor requested FEMA assistance to help with repairs for damage done to both public property as well as to individual homes and businesses. A preliminary damage assessment indicates about $43 million in damage to public infrastructure in 58 counties and on three reservations. The preliminary damage assessment for individual assistance is about $3 million covering 12 counties and three reservations.

Public property damage assistance has been approved for the counties of: Aurora, Beadle, Bennett, Bon Homme, Brookings, Brown, Brule, Buffalo, Campbell, Charles Mix, Clark, Clay, Codington, Davison, Day, Deuel, Dewey, Douglas, Edmunds, Fall River, Faulk, Grant, Gregory, Hamlin, Hand, Hanson, Hughes, Hutchinson, Hyde, Jackson, Jerauld, Jones, Kingsbury, Lake, Lincoln, Lyman, Marshall, McCook, McPherson, Mellette, Miner, Minnehaha, Moody, Oglala Lakota, Pennington, Perkins, Potter, Roberts, Sanborn, Spink, Sully, Todd, Tripp, Turner, Union, Walworth, Yankton, and Ziebach, as well as the Cheyenne River, Lake Traverse, and Rosebud Indian Reservations.

Individual assistance has been approved for the counties of: Bennett, Bon Homme, Charles Mix, Dewey, Hutchinson, Jackson, Mellette, Minnehaha, Oglala Lakota, Todd, Yankton, and Ziebach counties as well as the Cheyenne River, Pine Ridge, and Rosebud Indian Reservations. Individual assistance was not approved for Brookings, Kingsbury, Hamlin, and Turner counties as additional information is needed. It is possible those counties could be added at a later time.

In her letter requesting a disaster declaration, Noem said the severe weather this spring affected all parts of the state. People had to be rescued from their flooded homes, highways and roads were damaged, city infrastructure systems were overwhelmed by the high water, and the state’s agricultural industry was impacted.

“South Dakotans, as they always do, have helped each other recover from the winter storms and flooding,” Noem said. “But this federal assistance is the extra boost individuals, businesses, and governments need to recover from this disaster.”

South Dakota last received an Individual Assistance declaration in 2011 for widespread damage from Missouri River flooding. The last Public Assistance declaration was granted in 2016 following a Christmas ice storm.

  1. More socialism for the “proud, free” independent South Dakota – one of the nation’s best welfare states. Good job, South Dakota!

But please – next time take care of yourselves. We are tired of paying and paying and paying our hard-earned money to keep you going.

  2. The truthinator still doesn’t know the definition of socialism. It’s not that hard to google it.

  3. We’re all socialists after a natural disaster. Even Texas Senator Ted Cruz. The hypocrite who tried to block Hurricane Sandy aid to the East Coast in 2012 demanded the federal government expedite emergency funds for the survivors of Hurricane Harvey along the Gulf Coast of Texas, and in Houston, the nation’s fourth-largest city.

  4. Tara,

Please post the definition of socialism and tell us how that fits this case.

  5. Still waiting for the truthinator and Tara to post the definition of socialism and answer my question.

  6. The reality is that a wealthy elite have full control of our government and our economy, and they use both in whatever way they deem necessary to advance their agenda. We, the people, the consumers, are just “extras” or “bit players” in the big scheme of things.

Is the US “Socialist”? Well, we certainly are when it comes to bailing out “capitalists” who irresponsibly wreck our economy and then come whining to President Bush to make them rich again after losing it all. After the plunder of the Real Estate bubble had run its course, and the “losers” were determined, these billionaires lined up at the front door to the White House begging for money, and they got it. A country can’t get more “socialistic” than that. The Bush administration gave them billions, all of which came from the taxes of decent hard working citizens, many of whom were wiped out by that corrupt Real Estate fraud.

Routinely gigantic, multibillion dollar companies petition the Government for subsidies for their profitable businesses, and those are awarded every time. What could be more “socialistic” than handing over billions of dollars to giant profitable agribusinesses, pharmaceutical companies, and of course the Military Industrial Complex, just because they want more money than even their lucrative business dealings will provide?

On the national level, the US military is one of the largest socialist ventures the world has ever seen. The taxpayers are required to forego their own interests in order to fund these multi billion dollar expenditures for weapons that the country doesn’t need, the military doesn’t want, and for which there is no practical use. The Military budget is entirely a socialistic endeavor.

At the local level, we have fire, and police departments, all paid for by the tax payers. We have streets, highways, and the interstate highway system, which the taxpayers finance. Our public school systems are completely financed by the taxpayers.

And the list just goes on and on.

Capitalism only kicks in when some billionaires want to use these public infrastructures for their own private enrichment. So the national forests that are owned and maintained by the US Government for example, are leased to corporations for pennies so that they can “harvest” the trees on them, and make enormous private fortunes in the process. Same with the drilling rights for oil.

The reality is that US Capitalists just love Socialism, especially when they can use our resources for their personal individual enrichment, without having to compensate the society for that use, and when they can demand that society make them rich again if there business ventures fail. The reality is that a wealthy elite have full control of our government and our economy, and they use both in whatever way they deem necessary to advance their agenda. 1. “A country can’t get more “socialistic” than that.”

      It can, unfortunately.

    2. So we should get rid of the military and stop R & D on new weapons systems. Brilliant! Then we can be taken over by China or Russia and learn how good capitalism really was.

Take a look at Venezuela, Tara, and you will see that a country can get more socialistic.

  7. Why are you so afraid to post the definition of socialism?

I will give you another hint. The examples in the post you just posted is not socialism.

  8. Not afraid to post the dictionary definition of socialism…..socialism noun
    so·cial·ism | \ ˈsō-shə-ˌli-zəm \
    Definition of socialism
1 : any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods
2a : a system of society or group living in which there is no private property
b : a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state
3 : a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done
I am sure you agree with my posts too, right?

    1. The USA does not meet any of those definitions of socialism.

Some of your long post talks about crony capitalism.

Police, fire, roads. etc. are not socialism.

The leasing of Federal lands Is not socialism. I’m not sure why you brought up “pennies on the dollar”.

  9. It depends on who you talk to. I tend to disagree with you, but discussing issues is better than trash talking people using fake names.

    1. No it doesn’t depend on who you talk to.

What I said in my post is irrefutable by the dictionary.

Your examples and the issue of this thread does not meet the definition of socialism.

You are always welcome to your opinion of the facts, but that doesn’t change the facts.

  10. Tara – I think you way off on the socialism rant. The only examples of socialistic items the US uses on a large scale are Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. The examples you cited in many cases are just greed and corruption. The military is not socialism, nor are police, firefighters, etc. They are roles that need to be played and can only be played by the government as we could not have privatized these items as there is no money to be made. Roads, sewer, etc, same thing.

I hate to break this to you but, go to any country in the world, regardless of the political system, the rich rule that country and that is just a fact. Capitalism, while not perfect, is the only system that allows any sort of even playing field. I would love for SS, Medicare, and Medicaid to disappear as I could have invested that better myself than let a bunch of clowns who don’t know how to spend money dictate where it goes.

This system is far from perfect but, its the best we can hope for. I think the problem is too many politicians are bought and paid for and its always so amazing how rich they all get on $170k a year. All these clowns who want to see Donald Trump’s tax returns, fine but, release yours so we can see how you got rich.
