Thune Reacts to President Obama’s State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) tonight issued the following statement on President Obama’s sixth State of the Union address:

“America’s new Congress is focused on a reform agenda to fight for the middle class with policies to help create jobs, increase wages, and lower health care and energy costs. The president tonight laid out an agenda of top-down policies of the past to tax, to spend, and to regulate.

“South Dakotans know that bigger government doesn’t mean better government, but that’s exactly what the president proposed tonight, new ways to expand Washington’s already-overextended bureaucracy. After six years of the same stale policies, it’s time for new ideas.

“Republicans will turn Congress’ focus back to Americans’ top priorities: stimulating economic growth and improving the lives of middle-class Americans. This includes policies important to South Dakotans like approving the Keystone XL pipeline, reining in burdensome regulations, enacting trade agreements to put American goods on an equal playing field in the global market, and acting on other bipartisan jobs bills that have passed the House but were stuck in the United States Senate.

“Republicans believe in tapping into the potential of the American people, not the government, and we hope the president will finally join us.”

  1. Accurate analysis of the State of the Union Address:
(I only touched a tiny portion of the President’s address here, but you will probably be able to catch the atmosphere)
Obama: I want to help people get educated because two out of three jobs in the future will need at least some level of college education.
    Republicans: Sit on their butts.
Obama: I want to fix the infrastructure of the United States so companies come back and do their business here.
    Republicans: Sit on their butts.
Obama: I want women to be paid the same wage as men who are doing the same job.
    Republicans: Sit on their butts.
Obama: I want to continue to enhance the advance of science.
    Republicans: Sit on their butts.
Obama: I want to acknowledge that climate change is happening and that smart scientists from NASA to NAOH to universities all around the world tell us that we are at a critical point.
    Republicans: Sit on their butts.
Obama: I want people in America to earn a living wage.
    Republicans: Sit on their butts.
Obama: I want people to know in every neighborhood that their life matters.
    Republicans: Sit on their butts.
Obama: Hey, let’s don’t make this infrastructure thing about just one pipeline. Let’s make it a comprehensive infrastructure bill.
    Republicans: Sit on their butts.
And on and on and on…
Republicans sit on their butts. That is the moral of the story and probably a harbinger of things to come. Welcome to the American Oligarchy.

  2. they refused to applaud proposals designed to do them political harm. all you seem to have time to do is sit on your butt and clog up these political discussions with your rancor and discord. what a wonderful part of our process you play, disruptor and agitator. thanks for sharing.

    1. Wow, I can’t believe you just published that.

Carpenters have this saying, “Measure twice, cut once.”

You should try to adopt this saying, “Read twice. Use proper grammar rules. Check for idiotic comments. Then, and only then, press the comment tab.”

      1. my grammar is an intentional personal choice. your attempts to ridicule it, oh they cut me to the quick.

  3. Republicans think the voters gave them a mandate last November. American voters are a fickle lot. And Republicans will mandate themselves out of their Congressional majorities by … doing nothing. Which is typical.

    1. all the voters knew is that democrats lied, lied again and lied about the lies. once that cat’s out of the bag, you lose elections.
