I’m hearing rumors this morning that District 5 will have 2 new House candidates this coming election year. A source tells me that Byron Callies (former State Rep Melissa Magstadt’s father) and Hugh Bartles will both be throwing their hats in the ring.
With Roger Solum ineligible for another term, that leaves current State Rep Lee Schoenbeck facing a primary, unless Reid Holien plans to step down early (which I’ve heard nothing about), opening up that seat.
Keep those candidate rumors coming! You can e-mail me here.
Aren’t there any conservatives in that district?
Yes, and Lee typically wins rather easily.
Lots of liberals win easily. Hopefully, some conservatives come forward.
I know there are many rumors about the upcoming elections, and while I cannot speak to the intentions of Representatives Schoenbeck or Solum, I do plan on running for re-election. I like and respect both Roger and Lee, and would appreciate continuing to work with them if that coincides with their plans. I also know both are community leaders whether they are in the SD Legislature or not, and they will both continue to be leaders whether they are in the SD Legislature or not. I believe both Byron Callies and Hugh Bartels have expressed interest in SD Legislative seats, and both would be great candidates and a great proponent of District 5. Others may also get into the race. I also really respect the great people within the Republican Party here in Watertown that always keeps communication open between legislators, city leaders, and potential candidates. I know Pat has always said that having great candidates is a sign of strength in the GOP, and I know in District 5 we have a lot of strength.
Few would be silly enough to take on Mr. Schoenbeck when he is dabbling in the mix.
It’s Byron Callies, not Brian, and what kind of a joker is Anon 11: 47 that he would say something of which he knows nothing. Byron is very conservative.
The race isn’t always to the swift nor battle to the strong but that’s the way to bet.
My money is on Schoenbeck.
