From South Dakota News watch, Stu Whitney does a profile on the man who might be South Dakota’s least-liked political figure, Toby Doeden, as he spends as much as he can to try to be somebody:
“He checks a lot of boxes for a candidate,” said Carl Perry, a Republican state senator from Aberdeen who served as assistant majority leader in 2025 and was endorsed by Doeden.
and..
“He was looking for candidates who were committed, Christian and conservative, as well as upholding landowners’ rights,” said Perry, who defeated Katie Washnok, president of Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, in the primary after Doeden dumped more than $6,000 into the race.
The intraparty attacks, some of them mischaracterizing legislative votes or positions, rankled party traditionalists. Others noted the irony of Doeden calling people RINOs when his first vote in a Republican primary came in 2024.
“He’s a very mad and angry person,” said Lee Schoenbeck, a longtime GOP state senator who retired from office last year. “Mad and angry is not a public policy platform. It doesn’t educate our children, create jobs or make our communities safer. He will need to set forth a policy platform that is more than just being mad and angry.”
Doeden has been open about his interest in running for statewide office in 2026 as part of a “conservative revolution” in South Dakota, if past misdeeds and establishment resistance don’t impede his path.
and..
“There are two kinds of change agents,” said South Dakota Democratic Party executive director Dan Ahlers. “A disruptor who is intentional and tries to change the status quo in a positive way, and a disrupter who throws Molotov cocktails and watches things burn to the ground. Toby is the latter.”
A person can get out their checkbook to make their fire burn brighter and hotter than anyone else’s. But in the end, a dumpster fire is still a metal container full of garbage
I wonder if Doeden will announce he’s running for Governor before Hansen/Lems’ announcement next Thursday. Whoever announces first gets a first mover advantage. There’s a chance the first one to announce could scare the other one out of the race.
Hansens announcement of an announcement is already his announcement.
I hope people can see the inherent irony in the new populist, anti-capitalist movement being led by the richest men on earth who just so happen to enrich themselves while lamenting others’ wealth. If they didn’t have hypocritical principles, they wouldn’t have any principles at all.
Will Tobias Doeden pay actors and stage another 1 sack of groceries food giveaway drive up with different video shots and angles?
Will Tobias Doeden pay out of state actors to travel to Aberdeen and act like they are Aberdonians staging a ticker tape parade with signs showing Toby is Aberdeen’s hero kicking off his run for Governor? That would be quite a campaign commercial with locals wondering who are these people?
Legally it’s Tobin Doeden
Tobias is much more fitting. There is always money in the banana stand.
Maybe there should be a banana stand fire instead of a dumpster fire.
Who would be Toby Doeden’s running mate be?
Toby Doeden/Phil Jensen?
Toby Doeden/Travis Ismay?
Toby Doeden/ ?
Doeden – Ismay. That would be some ticket. The yard signs would probably weigh 600 pounds. What’s their slogan “have it your way”? It should be noted that as far as anyone can tell, Ismay was one of the few crazies that didn’t see any help from Doeden in the previous election.
Nobody would be good enough for him. He’d want to see his name twice. Doeden/Doeden for South Dakota.
Has anyone ever checked what he took for COVID money in 2020? Bet it was a pile of money. And I bet his businesses didn’t miss a beat at the same time. For a guy who hates the government, I bet he loves the free money.
Tbf, more establishment “free market” legislators did the exact same thing. Hell, one of them had a kid get a payout for a business he operated out of Texas. Doeden is an absolute pile, but this isnt a great critique.
The now out of state branded Aberdeen American News picked up the SD News Watch Story by Stu Whitney and posted it on their facebook page. Aberdeen’s most despised man is getting hammered in the comments and it is just getting started. They hit the nail on the head with this guy!
Me the people…Toby Doeden here is a challenge for you. Host an open to the public town hall so the voices you blocked and others can speak freely. This could be a great opportunity for you to climb out of the public opinion hole which has been getting worse in our part of the state. Everything comes out in the open Toby with you and the locals. Come on! What are you afraid of? Sunshine is the best disinfectant right?
Venue: The historic Aberdeen Civic Arena. You cover expenses and liability. Date and times announced in advance to maximize attendance by locals and those originally from the area.
Toby Doeden Open to The Public Aberdeen Town Hall
Lee said it perfectly. We have been polarized to think property rights are the only thing citizens of South Dakota should care about…or your librarian giving a book to your kid that is deemed too satanic for you. Irrelevant policies for personal agendas. This group of legislators is a joke. Where did the professionalization go?
I would be careful elevating his name, even negatively. I basically see him as SD’s Trump – outspoken, rich, populist, trash talks politicians while trying to become one, wants to privatize government services and run non-businesses “like a business”. There’s plenty of people in SD that would vote for that, just like they did Trump. The parallels are there.
You might try to draw similarities to Trump and I’ll admit, there are some superficial ones, but this time around Trump has some high quality cabinet members and advisors and there’s a methodology in his political agenda that centers policies that are truly representative for a majority of the voters.
Toby’s supporters and advisors are uniformly as arrogant and ignorant as Toby, and their policies represent only the uniformed and radical.
Toby and his cronies will ultimately fail, as they fall under more public scrutiny, but they WILL damage the South Dakota Republican Party immensely when they nominate their State Constitutional candidates for the 2026 election cycle.
Trump has high quality cabinet members? What are you guys on? There hasn’t been a single campaign promise kept while prices climb, inflation climbs, the economy crashes and foreign money is leaving the bonds and dollar. Not to mention, this clown wants to lower interest rates and compound it all while blaming Powell for his crappy policies. The guy might literally be the dumbest guy on the planet.
Oh, and Measles. We have a measles outbreak in the country that has more cases than all of last year and it’s just April. No worries, there is a big problem in Montana now with measles but you will never know because they aren’t announcing anything.
They are blaming the measles outbreaks on immigrants. I kid you not.
Personally I had not noticed prices being higher in the last two months, on anything other than what is made in China; in spite of that, prices on Temu seem to be steady. I have stocked up on zip ties and SD cards. And buttons and zippers, since Joann is closing. Are we blaming Trump because Joann closed?
The economy hasn’t crashed. Stock prices have fallen but if you leave them alone they will recover.
What does “leave them alone” even mean?
Don’t sell your stocks in a panic.
If you do anything with your investments, buy when the market is down
Your assuming the market has hit bottom. Look at the treasury selloffs. The volatility is making things too unpredictable. One week tariffs. Next week, no tariffs. Ope, tariffs are back on again! Now some are off, but some are higher. An old adage is that only a fool tries to time the market. Given the current market, you’d be pants-on-head-stupid to try and time it or tell others what to hold and sell. Even index funds are tanking. Better I sell than be a pollyanna watching his retirement going up in flames.
Toby will advise you to purchase bit coin. His son has a bit coin farm or whatever.
While his freedumb patriots attempt to block all data centers, Nicole breathmint and Logan babyhart also promoting bitcoin. So do we like data centers or not. The freedumb movement is hard to follow…
Anonymous 8:29 am – Not assuming anything, just sticking to the same investment strategy I’ve been using for decades. Investments are for the long-term and the markets will always be volatile.
No one should sell when thinking their “retirement is going up in flames”. If you’re investing money you need in the near-term, you’re “pants-on-head-stupid” for putting your money in the markets, at all.
I’m already retired and have been through markets similar to this before. I’m not changing my strategy just because of current conditions. My resources are more than adequate to meet my needs.
If the markets NEVER RECOVER, our market investments will be the least of our worries.
The difference between then and now, this is all self-incflicted by one man’s failed economic policy. If he ousts Powell, our credibility is gone and we may see an exodus from bonds and the dollar like has never been seen before. We haven’t even begun to feel the pain. We are starting to see it in industry and just wait until you see the trucking outlook.
Oh, in other words, THE SKY IS FALLING!!!
Guess we should all sell out at a loss, then.
The losses have barely started. Give it a year.
Those of is who came of age in the 70s have seen much worse economic conditions. There were very few jobs doing anything. We beat the streets and compared notes on what we were finding. A graduate of Colby College described visiting over 20 places in Boston in a single day, didn’t get a single offer, was so exhausted she tripped in the subway, landed on her face, chipped a front tooth and decided that was enough for one day.
A graduate of Harvard became a cab driver, with a regular route involving picking up and dropping off loads of school children. He said they liked to pretend the cab was an airplane, which was amusing, but “the worst thing about it is, they won’t let me be the pilot.”
After I graduated from UMass, it took me over two months of daily searches and interviews to land a job that paid $80/week and did not require a high school diploma. It was in a laboratory, and one of my first assignments was to make a molar solution of something, I don’t remember what it was. I just remember that it required me to use what I had learned in high school chemistry, and that meant my college education had been a waste.
The reason the baby boomers went to college, though, was because the generation ahead of us had come of age in the 30s. In their eyes, a college education was insulation against a true economic depression. People who had college degrees had jobs, so there was a huge rush into post-secondary education.
What is happening now is just a blip compared to what has happened before..The stock market will recover. In the meantime, get a job. There are plenty of jobs out there, unlike in the 30s and 70s. You can do this. You might not like it, but you can do it.
You notice how we’re giving each other pep talks because we’re afraid of how the President is tanking the economy? Is this what America being great again feels like?
Great again, like the past 4 years? Great again, like the Obama years?
The bigger the mess you’re cleaning up, the more aggressive and disruptive the process will be.
For those of us that remember what it took for Reagan to clean up after the Carter years, this is nothing.
So in order to deal with what you blame Biden for, Trump needs to threaten tariffs, then withdraw the threat, then make it again, then withdraw it again, then implement them against the entire planet, then withdraw them again with no deal in place with any of the nations he threatened? That reads like fiction, but ok.
I don’t believe zero reciprocal tariffs is the end goal as such. I think he’s really working to isolate China.
Not an undesirable goal.
Wise companies are reshoring production in the US.
China is signing deals with every one of our former allies. They are buying Canadian oil and dropped 90% of the oil exports of that they buy from us. Sane economist everywhere are saying the US already lost and you guys are doubling down on the stupidity. Recession is our future at this rate. China will take our spot as a global leader and they will be able to influence all of their allies who all once were ours. Great job, morons.
Except China is now working economically with old enemirs, including Japan. JAPAN. Are you aware of these two countries’ history with each other? And Trump brought them together. Yeah, China is super isolated, you dingus.
These trumpers are acting like post ww11 economic theory will work today. Its not surprising since they have never opened a history book and barely have a highschool education. They keep trying to reassure the cult members that it is all part of a plan…..gas up, food up, unemployment up, inflation up. America sure is great under this dei admin. You just need to be white and an idiot to serve with Trump.
You mean the best recovery amongst all nations worldwide? The economy was booming under Biden when he handed it off to Trump. Trump is going to set another record for debt and spending.
This forum is a place where the old guard comes to make themselves feel relevant.
What did all of you in here thing about Toby’s Good Friday post where he slapped his campaign logo on an image of Jesus on the cross? Good? Bad? Indifferent?
What? Where did he do this?
Yep! Found it! Totally classless and typical of Doeden.
