Jim, the job in and of itself doesn’t have anything to do with an IM 22 violation with respect to you in the legislature, but hers two related reasons why the law is either bad policy or dumb:
1 it assumes you as an elected official would be morally corrupted by your wife getting gifts of more than $100 from Sanford, but this year you voted against Sanford’s biggest issue in the legislature, any willing provider repeal. Your wife’s employment didn’t affect your vote (I didn’t even know of that relationship and it sure didn’t show in the debate)
2 it’s the bookkeeping requirement for those that want to make a habit of acting legally (ok, Obama people like Weiland aren’t concerned about this aspect), because you have to identify everything in a year that you and your family get for less than fair market value (the calendar,a mug…) and which entities the giver is affiliated with, because when the cumulative value (caused by those cookies and hot choclate late in the calendar year-Christmas event) tick over $100 – you’re a criminal.
She can keep her job. You can keep your office. But you do need to add Excel spreadsheet to both your phones and get used to interrogating those nasty people that extend friendship with a free coffee or lunch. Not exactly South Dakota friendly
Jim, I stand corrected. I missed the “employment” in the gift definition. You do have a problem, and that law is even dumber than I thought before
i will bet Cory’s wife is glad he got beat. Ministers seldom pay for meals out of appreciation.*. Imagine the hassle for her, rather than just saying thank you, asking the giver for place of employment and civic organizations they are members, and having to do a quick check to see if they have a lobbyist because you know they won’t take no for an answer to buying lunch.
You know Bishop Zelmer wouldn’t get rid of his lobbyist. Or Lutheran Social Services. Or Good Sam. Or Augie. LOL
*. I can’t count the number of times I’ve told a waiter I want to buy lunch for the minister across the room and have it be anonymous to have only heard “You are the fifth person to offer. It is already taken care of.”
These memes are taking off. Awesome.
