Thune Statement on USDA Plan to Issue Second Round of Federal Aid to Farmers
“I’m committed to working with my colleagues in Congress and with the president and his administration to work as quickly as possible to wrap up these trade negotiations, open new markets, and give these family-run operations the certainty and security they deserve from the marketplace.”
WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) today issued the following statement after U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Sonny Perdue announced that USDA would issue up to $16 billion in aid to producers who have been affected by ongoing trade disputes around the world. This would be the second round of USDA-authorized Market Facilitation Payments, and the first of up to three payment tranches from this round of funding would be made to producers in late July or early August.
“I hear from South Dakota farmers every day who tell me it’s getting harder and harder to make ends meet in today’s sluggish agriculture economy, and the uncertainty is making it more difficult to plan for the future,” said Thune. “While I’m glad the administration recognizes what they’re going through, if you asked any single one of these farmers, they’d tell you they’d rather have a strong economy and open global markets than receive a federal payment. While the second round of these payments appears to be calculated differently, and hopefully more equitably, than the first, I still believe these payments are more of a Band Aid than a solution. I’m committed to working with my colleagues in Congress and with the president and his administration to work as quickly as possible to wrap up these trade negotiations, open new markets, and give these family-run operations the certainty and security they deserve from the marketplace.”

I smell socialism.
Let’s discuss the farm bill Ike.
What percentage goes to farmers and what percentage goes to food stamps and other food programs?
Please state the percentages and also dollar amounts.
Let’s also discuss that Pelosi and Schumer back Trump on his stance with China.
It’s hilarious watching Cory Heidelberger keep posting about farmers when most of them back Trump’s stance as does the Democrat party leaders.
If you love the USA you want to stop China from stealing our intellectual property.
I’m sure you don’t understand that Ike just like Cory doesn’t.
The sad part is Cory is using farmers and the low prices for political gain.
What kind of person puts politics over their Country?
Um, the kind that launders money for Russian mobsters?
Link to the evidence Ike.
Let’s discuss the Biden’s China and Russian money Ike.
You game for that Ike?
At least you were smart enough to not defend Cory.
Who is Cory? Booker? Feldman? Ander?
You don’t know Cory Heidelberger?
Do you post in his blog Ike?
Why are you deflecting from my substantive questions?
Why don’t you want to answer them?
Why didn’t you provide a link to back up your statement?
Are you still game to discuss the Biden China and Russia money?
Odin said: “It’s hilarious watching Cory Heidelberger keep posting about farmers when most of them back Trump’s stance as does the Democrat party leaders.”
It’s easy for farmers to support him when they know they’re going to get a bailout. There’s nothing to lose, no skin in the game.
It’s the height of hypocrisy to support a failed trade policy on one hand and take govt bailout money in the other.
Failed trade policy?
So you and Cory want the US to have their intellectual property stolen.
We understand that.
Thankfully, Trump, Pelosi, and Schumer disagree with you.
Perhaps this trade war will result in better IP protection. Perhaps not. This is speculation.
What we know for sure is that farm income is down due to tariffs enacted as part of this trade war. And because farm income is down, the government is now bailing those farmers out. These are facts.
Farm income was down before the trade war because of supply and demand.
Soybeans got hurt but they would have anyway because China’s pigs are dying due to disease.
It’s apparent you have no clue about the ag industry.
It’s clear you care more about politics than the USA winning the trade war.
Why is that?
Why do you want the USA to lose?
I’ve forgotten more about the ag industry than you’ll ever know, Odin. Farm income wasn’t down to the extent that farmer’s needed a bailout, like they do now, which is a direct result of current policy.
And if you happen to be a farmer who supports Trump on one hand and takes this govt bailout on the other, you’re not the type of farmer I want to have anything to do with.
Most farmers don’t “need” the bailout right now.
It’s not a bailout. It’s a direct attack against the Chinese attack.
There is a reason sugar beet farmers aren’t getting any money.
It’s clear you don’t know anything about the ag industry since I just schooled you.
I will be glad to discuss the price increases and decreases in commodity prices since 2000 if you want.
American millionaire farmers are now the biggest corporate welfare class in the country where those in manufacturing here in the US who are losing far more are required to pay by taxes and tariffs in helping South Dakota farmers to buy yet another winter home.
What kind of country gives preferential treatment to a segment of society while ignoring others who are needy and not multimillionaires? Thune et al could care less about non farmers in South Dakota.
Who is needy in SD and has not had their concerns addressed?
“Why should my taxes go to people who made bad choices (voting for Trump)?”
Why should my taxes go to people who made choices giving us ObummerCare? Why should Obama and his minions at the IRS get away with using the IRS as a political weapon against conservative groups? Why should Slick Willy and Hillary get away with obstruction of justice (destruction of cell phones, wiping of servers, meeting with Obummer’s crooked AG on the tarmac), why should Obummer get away with sending our tax dollars to a terrorist regime in Iran?
Oh, wait, I know! Because Democrats don’t have to follow the same rules as the rest of us because they are special!
Yeah! And what about Harding? Golf, mistresses, and the friggin’ Teapot Dome, man.
So what you’re saying is that Trump is as bad as a bunch of filthy Dems?
Do you know how stupid you look right now with that statement?
We don’t even know if you pay income taxes.
~50% of the US doesn’t. It used to be ~47% before Trump’s tax cut.
Why do you just deflect the problems your current moron in chief has created by talking about conspiracy theories that are years old? You deplorables constantly whine “elections matter” and that the dems need to give up on pointing out all the contradictions in Rump’s policies.
If this is not the most “socialist” policy currently running in America, I would love to know what tops is.
And don’t be confused, I am all for all of the great things like medicare, FEMA, farmer subsidies, all of that. I just cant figure out how you can parse this from those with any sort of intellectual honesty.
Post the amount of money paid to farmers versus the amount of money paid for food stamps and other food programs.
I bet you won’t since your an anom.
Dude, how does that matter in any way whatsoever? This is ADDITIONAL money, new money, money that wasn’t already included in the farm bill. It’s a direct government bailout. It doesn’t get more socialist than that.
Dude,
Post the percentage of farmer vs. food stamp.
I bet you didn’t know that China subsidies their farmers more than the US does
Want to take that bet?
It’s clear you don’t know the definition of the word socialism.
Please post it so we can discuss it.
It’s not relevant Odin. This is additional money that we have to give farmers due to their losses from failed trade policy.
If not for the trade policy, this subsidy would not have been necessary. Let’s discuss that.
It’s not a trade policy.
The US is finally fighting back for China cheating.
Do you even understand what this is about?
The US Farmers can not plant crops and replant the seed the next year.
The Chinese can buy US seed and replant the seed because they cheat.
The US has been getting screwed for decades.
Are you saying that’s OK that the farmers have been getting screwed?
You are as dumb as Cory is.
You’re a master of the irrelevant non-sequitur.
But I get it. You don’t like the facts, so you want to talk about anything but them.
It’s not trade policy, it’s a trade war. Sure, call it what you want. But to whatever extent farmers were losing BEFORE Trump, they’re losing worse now. Now they can’t even make enough money to survive without a govt bailout. You can’t deny this, so you’ll try to change the subject.
I’m a master of facts.
Please explain how China would buy the same amount of soybeans when their pigs are dying.
Since we are talking about facts, why are you against Pelosit and Schumer? They back Trump’s trade war.
“I’m a master of facts.”
Ha. You sound like a 12 year old. I’m out.
Of course you are are out since you lost the debate. I’m middle aged and I will gladly kick your azz intellectually in person rather than a message board. Just name the place and I will be there. You will pay the travel cost if it’s over 100 miles from where I live.
Odin I doubt you could debate this individual in person. He is unable to drive a vehicle in Colorado and cannot remember how to get back to South Dakota. He was suppose to meet me in Missouri and I offered to pay his bus fare but he chickened out.
I’ll be your huckleberry Odin. I’m an expert in international trade. So far what you are spewing is complete nonsense and symptomatic of the current anti-China rhetoric by narcissistic Trump. Have you ever traded anything on import/export? Do you understand how the distribution chain works on commodities and raw materials for US factories? I believe you listen to the news and decide your knowledge from only sound bites. Right?
Great,
You’re an expert but your post didn’t say anything about how I was wrong.
Nobody said there wouldn’t be short-term pain.
Why do democrats want to lose to China?
Firstly, there is no deficit as Trump expounds as US industries in China realize the difference by their sales there, secondly US corporations realize 55 cents on every dollar imported from China, thirdly, US only imports account for only 1.2% of our entire annual GDP on fully made products (Walmart, shoes, clothes) and .6% of needed commodities for US manufacturing (so around 2% of our total GDP), fourthly, the IP issue is a marketing tool to divert from the real issue of US falling behind the rest of the world on updating US factories to the 21st century so they can be competitive (CEOs are stealing the money that should be used for retooling), fifthly, companies like Apple could not exist without China and grow exponentially as they did (remember the 55 cents on every dollar), sixly, China invests in American innovation as well as their own because US venture capitalists will not invest in anything other than energy and high tech so many industries seek China who will invest in new innovations, and seventhly, most of the issues with China occurred because US Customs would not enforce their own trade laws citing to us that they have no money…so we in industry conducted our own sting on US companies violating federal law..and now Customs will indict because they were too lazy to do the work before. I know, I’m involved in one case now where China was blamed but in fact it was 5 US companies that caused all the problems. So Odin you really don’t know what is going on and would advise not to spend your time listening to media gossip or radical right wing rednecks.
Why are Chuck and Nancy behind Trump if the US isn’t getting screwed by China?
…really and you believe Chuck and Nancy on anything or Congress in general?
I forgot. You need to post links to prove your numbers.
I am the link.
I figured you would not give us links.
You might as well stay on the out of town blog where no evidence is required.
How can the expert offer links when he/she is the expert. What are links anyway, links written by so-called journalists? Only liberals believe a link written by some kid activist proves a point.
What Trump is doing is clearly socialism. Picking and choosing winners and losers in business, taking control of who can and can’t be in business, etc.
Another person who doesn’t know the definition of socialism.
I guarantee you Trump does not control who will own a business or not.
Really, he put our business out of business, a commodity that is Chinese tech and only made in China that would take over a market and be eco friendly. Odin, you are acting like a 5th grader with your gibberish activism. You really don’t get it do you?
He and government control the entry and success of business by the conditions imposed. Only favored industries are allowed to function and is a structured socialism and not market driven capitalism.
Are you referring to Obama and coal?
Democrats did some of this favored industry demarcation especially if it concerned environmentalism. Trump is favoring industries he likes like the auto industry and farming where he gives money to his favored charity, ie agriculture.
Trump is fighting China.
Obama was not fighting China.
You haven’t addressed the livestock industry and their subsidies.
Please do so.
Agriculture equals all sectors. I stopped eating meat, bad for health and causes colon cancer.
Why won’t one Democrat answer this question?
Post the amount of money paid to farmers versus the amount of money paid for food stamps and other food programs.
This is why I can safely say that if a Democrat opens their mouth they are lying.
Odin/Jason/KM/Jon Gohn – No matter which name you use, your questions are without merit or meaning. Comparing SNAP to Tariff Subsidies would result in what conclusion?
Who?
Socialism!
