US Senator John Thune’s Weekly Update: We’re Just Getting Started

We’re Just Getting Started
By Sen. John Thune

President Trump recently came to Congress to report on his first few weeks in office and lay out his vision for the next four years. In just a few weeks, President Trump has already accomplished an incredible amount, and this is just the start.

Chief among his achievements is restoring order to the southern border. In February, 8,450 illegal immigrants were caught trying to cross the southern border. Not long ago, Border Patrol was sometimes dealing with that many apprehensions in a single day. This turnaround means that Border Patrol can focus on the criminals, cartels, traffickers, and terrorists who once tried to hide behind the chaos.

President Trump has also wasted no time in addressing the national energy emergency our country faces. The United States is heading toward an energy crisis where we don’t have enough energy to meet demand. Instead of taking steps to increase our energy supply, the Biden administration pushed us further toward crisis with measures to restrict conventional energy development. President Trump and Republicans in Congress are already working to increase our nation’s energy supply to promote a secure and affordable energy future.

One of the signature accomplishments of President Trump’s first term was the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Making that tax relief permanent is a priority for President Trump and congressional Republicans. We are hard at work laying the groundwork to protect American families, small businesses, and farmers and ranchers from a tax hike next year, and we will keep working to put more money in hardworking Americans’ pockets.

President Trump has also taken actions to restore commonsense in government. He’s worked to protect children from a radical gender ideology and keep biological men out of women’s and girls’ sports. He’s committed to eliminating 10 regulations for every new regulation his administration proposes. And the list goes on.

This is just the start. I’m proud that the Senate has already confirmed almost all of the president’s Cabinet. Senate Republicans helped get President Trump’s team in place faster than any of the last three administrations, and they’re on the job delivering on the promises President Trump made to the American people.

President Trump has brought a new direction to Washington and to our country. As always, I’m particularly grateful for President Trump’s faith in America. He reminds us of how blessed we are to live in this great country and that, in America, everything is possible.

      1. Your tribalism is what’s limiting you. If you can’t hold your own party to account, you’ll be on the wrong side of history. Branch out and try to broaden your perspective. You can be a republican and still challenge leadership, in fact that makes you an American through and through. Try it some time, you might be surprised that you don’t have to support a dithering sycophant and you can still have conservative values, real conservative ones, not this fake grandstanding.

          1. This kind of attitude is so funny. You want to argue with a citizen instead of hold the elected official to doing his job representing our state.

      2. I am a Republican. Trumps first four years he hardly spoke. The last four years he refused to work with the other side and now he has chosen to be follower, not a leader. Do you really think Congress is working hard? You have no clue if I worked hard in my life or not. But chances are I worked a hell of lot harder than anyone in Congress.

        1. Thune has a big tailwind right now and a President of his party that doesn’t want Congress to lift a finger. If the Senate and House flip in 2026, we might see how much of McConnell rubbed off on him.

  1. I just wish Senator Thune would be honest about the tax cuts from Trump’s first term. Thune said they would be paid for by the huge expansion in the economy that would increase tax receipts. It did not happen but what did is a huge increase in the national debt ($7.8 trillion) in Trump’s first term. Corporations and the extremely wealthy got a huge tax cut and everyone else got only minimal decreases.

  2. So far Trump has brought nothing but chaos. When are the republicans going to stand up to him. We do need to change things. But in a well thought out way. Not just slash and burn and then realize you have to back track because you didn’t think it through. The congress needs to rein in the chaos and quit acting like snakes following the pied piper off a cliff

  3. The energy crisis caused by crypto mining and AI data centers.

Good thing MAGA started the trade war with Canada so they are going to raise electric prices to the US.

Thune the Goon, aka the “human fence post” does his best work when he says nothing and releases CRP in droughts that happen every other year now because of climate change.

Moar oil is of course the answer!!!

  4. Thune is tied to crypto and supporting them at the expense of South Dakotans. He’s worse than Daschle ant this point. Ask his son-in-law about the bitcoin mining using the Oahe dam water for free. I think they should pay for the dam water!

And don’t pull this comment Pat, it’s a play on words. Started noticing your pulling comments even when they comply with your rules so hoping you’re not censoring ideas you don’t like too.

  5. Trump auctioned off operations of the federal government to the highest bidder. Sold! $277,000,000 to Elon Musk.

    1. The facts don’t square with your DNC talking points.

The latest Rasmussen Reports survey finds that 66% of Likely U.S. Voters agree with Trump’s statement: “It’s time to drain the swamp in Washington, D.C.” That includes 44% who Strongly Agree.
