Jean Hunhoff Announces Candidacy for South Dakota State Senate, District 18

“When People Matter, Experience Matters.”

YANKTON, S.D. — Jean Hunhoff today announced her candidacy for the South Dakota State Senate Republican primary, pledging to bring her experience and practical leadership back to Pierre to serve the people of District 18.

“Leadership isn’t about headlines. It’s about people,” Hunhoff said. “I have always believed public service means listening first, working together, and doing what’s right for South Dakota families. That’s why I’m running for the State Senate because when people matter, experience matters.”

Rooted in the values of hard work, service, and community that define southeastern South Dakota, Jean has dedicated her life to caring for people and strengthening the region she calls home. A nurse and small business owner, she has spent her career helping others, and her years in local government and the legislature earned her a reputation for asking tough questions, managing budgets responsibly, and finding common sense solutions to complex challenges.
Hunhoff’s priorities reflect the conversations she’s had with people across Yankton and Clay Counties: parents, business owners, farmers, educators, and health-care professionals who want steady, practical leadership focused on results.

“This campaign is not about going back. It is about putting experience to work for South Dakotans once again,” Hunhoff said. “It is time to return to a kind of service that puts people ahead of politics and delivers real results for our communities.”

As a Republican candidate for District 18, Hunhoff said her focus will remain on strengthening families, supporting education, helping local businesses succeed, protecting access to health care, and ensuring that the next generation can build their future right here at home.

Hunhoff and her husband, Dan, raised their family in Yankton and continue to be active in community life.

  1. Jean is desperately needed back in Pierre. The voters of District 18 need to show up and get it right this time.

  2. She is smart, capable, and experienced. Based on that alone, I am incredibly nervous that she will not be elected, as those seem to be traits District 18 has not recently been fond of.

  3. It makes you wonder why former politicians don’t enjoy their kids and grandkids rather than perpetually seek a return to political power. Jean is smart and very knowledgeable, but she’s no change agent and has never really prioritized her constituents.

    1. The alternative to Jean is what we have now, I will choose Jean all day, every day.

It is clear you have never served and do not understand how the process actually works. If your idea of a “change agent” is someone who holds press conferences in the hallways, refuses to keep caucus meetings private, harasses LRC staff, spreads misinformation, pouts, and does not show up for votes, then keep the status quo.

If you want someone who works tirelessly for their district, helps balance the state budget, loves South Dakota, and uses common sense, then Jean is your Representative.

  4. Jean is solid. She has championed fiscal responsibility, and that’s good for her constituents and the state. Plus, I have her on me about things for Yankton – she’s a pit bull for Yankton.

  5. I just dont see it happening. I also don’t see changes in the Aberdeen race either. If anything I see the margins widening with greater turnout. The party has changed and so have the age demographics.

  6. She needs a bigger hat. The crazies have one more session to wreck the state. Let’s hope for the better next election cycle.

  7. Nelson and Julie Auch form a formidable duo for their district. Possible only topped by district 3. Hot Carl, Brandei and Big Al are the tops. They hate development of all types too. Science and smarts as well. But Lauren and Julie actually live in their district, Brandie and Big Al don’t. It’s hard to tell which district wins. Races to the bottom.

    1. If that is the best you can do.

Lazy, misinformed, sitt’in in your parents’ basement playing video games, armchair wanna be is no way to go through life.

Please put your name on a ballot and run because we need more of your ilk in Pierre.

  8. I can’t wait for Lauren Nelson to report back on her trip she was gonna take to Mississippi to see what they were doing as they were making huge strides on their test scores. News flash, Lauren, Mississippi is still in the shitter when compared to SD on NAEP test scores. Your hate for public education is SD is disgusting. You want to fill your pockets with tax payer money at your Christain school. You perjured yourself and lied on the Senate Floor along with Sue Peterson(ties to Sioux Falls Christian) using made up dollar amount on Public School adminstrators vs public school teacher. It is disgusting what you and Sue did. My vote is for Hunoff, at least she’s honest.

  9. Jean is a fiscal watchdog who offers a huge amount of experience compared to other legislators. She has the best interest of South Dakota at heart. Jean is desperately needed back in Pierre! Go Jean!
