Dusty Johnson first statewide candidate on the election ballot

From Facebook, the Dusty Johnson for Governor campaign is officially on the ballot:

In addition, I’m hearing they have set a high bar for accuracy as well, in terms of how many valid signatures they filed.  Over 87%.  That’s not too bad. Press release coming on this I’m told.

  1. What I’m hearing is Dusty intends to challenge everyone else’s petitions. He knows this will be a tough race for him.

    1. Good point. I can see why the ten point lead, his groundgame advantage, and the fundraising gap would cause him concern.

      1. All that money and decades of campaigning has led him to 70% of GOP primary voters preferring someone else. Yeah, I wouldn’t pop the bottle just yet.

        2. Let’s follow this line of reasoning with the other candidates:

          Toby Doeden is an established businessman spending truckloads of his money to get his name out and 82% of South Dakotans still prefer someone else.

          Rhoden is the current governor and former lieutenant governor and 83% of South Dakotans still prefer someone else.

          Hansen has been serving in South Dakota politics for over a decade and was the former pro temp speaker, and 86% of South Dakotans still prefer someone else.

          Nice rhetorical flourish you had there, but it is remarkably short on substance.

      2. Dusty has a low ceiling for support. Everyone knows him, and everyone know what they think of him. He won’t do well in a contested primary.

          1. That wasn’t a real race. It’s pathetic Taffy did as well as she did. That alone is evidence of Dusty’s inherent weakness with primary voters.

          2. Jeff, I hope you’re better at offering financial advice that you are at analyzing elections.

              1. Dusty is a known and trusted statewide entity, while Rhoden is a term-filler west river question mark to voters who may not enjoy the mentions of Trump and Noem as much as they used to. Hansen is probably at his peak, Doeden too probably. This race is Dusty’s. End of story.

                1. I hope you’re not a paid strategist; you don’t understand the dynamics of this race at all.

                  1. I see what kind of nonstop gaslighting Rhoden Doeden & Jon have to put out there. This is Dusty’s to win or lose.

                    1. Dusty lost this race the moment he entered it. As the incumbent, he could have held on to a seat in the house indefinitely, but he cannot break 35% of the vote in a contested primary. This goes to a runoff and Dusty loses.

                    2. Let it go to runoff, Dusty and whoever’s second, probably Rhoden. That should settle the matter. Which is to say, I disagree with you.

      1. I wish he was a little more about the issues and undermining opponents at this point. I feel like I’m watching an Encyclopedia Brown kids mystery. Just sayin.

        1. We have to see more “executive,” and soon. How that big brain is gonna lead us and grow us.
