“While others talk plans, Governor Larry Rhoden delivers results,” the ad says before diving into Governor Rhoden’s specific accomplishments to keep South Dakota strong, safe, and free:
“Governor Larry Rhoden has accomplished these results in just 15 months on the job,” said Ian Fury, Campaign Manager for Rhoden for Governor. “Let the other candidates make plans – Governor Rhoden will keep doing his job.”

    1. He’s not upset. When the first part of every one of Dusty’s plans is: ”make it look like Larry doesn’t have a plan”, or “make it seem like Larry’s plan is failing”, this is a valid response.

    2. It’s so weird how starting a statement with “it’s so weird” can make the ordinary and unremarkable seem odd and strange.

  1. “Getting the prison across the finish line”?

Come on Larry, you wouldn’t brag about the fence you built on the ranch before you pounded a single fence post.

    1. Legislative agreement and confirmation is a bit different (huge) than the ‘first fence post’. The analogy sounded good but not even a comparison. Your lack of the legislative process shows.

  2. Said it before, will say it again: I like Rhoden, even though I won’t likely vote for him. I cannot stand Fury and I have no idea why he continues to find work here. Rhoden looks bad by association.

      1. His team is a problem for a lot of people. His ads are the best of the cycle.

    1. The next time you see me in public at an event, at DakotaMart, or wherever, I’d encourage you to shake my hand, say hello, and tell me what you wish I’d do differently. If I knew your name, I’d do the same.

      1. The first would be to get off social media like twitter and cease popping off on people like an 18 year old edgelord. Admittedly, your content has improved in that regard since Noem’s departure, but that behavior is beneath the office you are supposed to represent.

    2. Rhoden has never won anything, and frankly it’s getting old seeing these politicians want to serve out their retirement years on the public payroll.

      1. Never won anything?
        School board
        Legislature races many times
NUMEROUS leadership roles (Whip, Majority Leader) House/Senate (voted by his legislative peers)
        Probably Homecoming King
        Whatever else
        Nothing you say?

        1. He is tired and it shows. Larry will be relieved a year from now being retired at the ranch sitting in a rocking chair outside enjoying the scenery.

      1. 1. You’re
        2. The decisions the govenor makes matter, including whom he has on staff.

  3. Most of these ‘accomplishments’ he takes credit for were inherited from his predecessors. The only true win for him in the past year was getting the prison plan approved. I’ll give him credit for that one.

    1. The prison task force was his idea so agree, he should get credit for that one. The property tax cut bills? Also a Rhoden task force accomplishment and even joining forces with Hansen whose bill (among most of his would) was going to FAIL. Despite Hansen taking credit for about everything else Rhoden did (Maude case, USD prof/Kirk death comment, Amendment G to name a few), he still worked for us, the people, to get that bill over the finish line.

    1. Wonder why he’s in third with little to no money? Why don’t people get behind him more? Is there something I’m missing?

      1. Rhoden is doing OK under the circumstances. He’s a rancher from Union Center. He didn’t take over a car dealership (like Doeden). He doesn’t have a slush fund of federal money (like Dusty).

Dusty brings 6-7 years of federal dollars to a small-state race. That’s why he can put out a couple ads each month for months in advance of the primary. For better or worse, there’s a lot of voters who like Dusty but a sizable group that view him as too liberal. He has a cap in the polls.

Doeden is self-funding his campaign, burning through savings and hawking private jets. He can’t buy ads at the rate Dusty can, nonetheless he’s been burning money for almost a year now.

The goal is primary day. A true politician doesn’t care if they’re leading in the polls 3 months out from the election. They need to lead the polls on election day. If Doeden wants a chance, he’ll need to increase his spending 10 fold in the month leading up to the election. That’ll be hard sell for a self-funder.

Dusty has the money to spend and he has the discipline. Again, he’s a good campaigner. The question is, can he keep the never-Dustys splintered enough. Every other candidate that drops out from now to primary day passes their voters to someone who’s not Dusty. The first to fall is likely Hanson. He doesn’t have a lot, but enough and most will go Rhoden. Doeden has the hardest hard right voters, and if he drops (which is unlikely), they would likely go Hansen, Rhoden and finally Dusty in that order. Doeden voters might even stay home if Dusty is the only option.

As far as Rhoden, normally an incumbent counts on 2 things. Momentum and the party. In his case, Noem sucked the oxygen out of the room and the state GOP is a joke. He’s a rancher from Union Center goin’ it alone. He has limited cash, so he has to play his cards right. He put out one really good ad a few months ago. He got is petitions in. He’s organizing a quiet ground game. He put out this short ad, and its well done, with 2 months to go. He probably has the money for one really strong month of campaigning. As the saying goes, he’ll keep his power dry for a few more weeks.

Dusty has a cap (the never-Dustys). Doeden has a cap (people with a functioning frontal cortex). Rhoden is likeable. If you’re not already a Rhoden ranger, you still like him more than your worst enemy.

        1. Toby Doeden can win this but he is going to have to spend every bit of money he has and go into deep debt and sell some properties. He can do this! So close Toby! We need you! Power to the people, not the powerful!

            1. Kind of like Kamala did, huh?

Oh wait, she didn’t lose. It was because the rest of the country didn’t follow your expectations.

              1. explain in full detail what your remark even means. explain so even toby can understand.

          1. I can’t wait to see him self-finance himself into oblivion, and then lose. We don’t need him, we don’t want him.

      2. He’s not in third place. Public Opinion Strategies poll showed a 9 point lead in a head-to-head with Johnson (less than a month ago).

Morning Consult poll showed 81% of SD Republicans approve of the job he’s doing. Pretty good stats.

  4. Governor Mr. Rhoden is showing the way forward by executing plans, while others plan to execute, or just blather *cough*doeden*cough*.

  5. Another ad without Larry talking in it… at least he is self aware about his inability to speak

  6. Larry is a nice guy but we should be honest about his true brain power.

What does he have to do with any of the items mentioned except the prison? Anyone paying attention knows Tony was behind the small success. They also lied to all their halfway sane legislative friends. They completely moved locations and wasted millions. They manipulated the democrats with false promises to get them to agree.

Less than 5 legislators endorse him. If he was a results deliverer then that number would change.

  7. The Governor is honest; Dusty just talks and tries to be somebody he is not. I hate his commercials. Fake farming ones make me gag.

    1. Can a man call himself a rancher while no cattle graze beneath his care? Such a claim rings hollow—like a title worn without truth. For what is one who names himself as something he has not yet become, if not a shadow reaching beyond its form?

      1. Born and raised a rancher has ranched up until several years ago, what does it take to get a earned title from you?

      2. You wouldn’t make it a day on the ranch in the life he lived. He’s a rancher through and through.

        1. No. He can’t. But I can assure you he knows more about welding than anyone else. He could tell Larry he’s been welding wrong his entire life. When you are that smart you just know things.

          1. We can have a test at the next debate. Standard arc, quarter inch stick weld running bead in cross hand, down hand and up hand. Points off for pinholes. That’ll settle it. None of this “I only do wire feed” stuff.

  8. A year from now Larry will be looking out of his kitchen windows at the light rain falling on his ranch and pondering what chores will need to be done around the place, and then head out to check to see if he has any new calves to tag. The phone won’t ring, no emails to check, no meetings, just Larry doing what he wants to do; ranch. The bonus to this story is that we, the voters of South Dakota, helped make it happen for him. Godspeed back at the Rhoden Ranch Larry, godspeed.

    1. You appear to have given this romance novel prelude a great deal of thought. On which page does Nonymous enter the story in a flimsy negligee?

    2. The view from the kitchen window overlooking Capitol Lake and the Capitol are a view I’m sure he’ll enjoy for another 4 years. The phone will be ringing off the hook as it does now, the emails will be flowing in as they are now, he’ll be turning down meetings because there isn’t enough time in the day. And he’ll be making great changes for our state and working with legislators as he does now.

  9. The ads are excellent. The strategy is decent. The staff is competent. The fund-raising is acceptable. But in the end, every campaign begins and ends with the candidate. In this case, though an incumbent, the candidate just doesn’t have the energy, intellect, or charisma to defeat harder-working and more competent candidates. It will be embarrassing, but unsurprising, to see the incumbent governor finish dead last in the four-way Republican primary.

    1. Tell us you’re a Doeden person without telling us you’re a Doeden person. Ignorant.

  10. Given that both Hansen and Doeden want to defund public education (Hansen by wanting to shift the money away from the public schools to the private ones, Doeden by eliminating property taxes) I am surprised neither Johnson nor Rhoden are going negative with that.

When is somebody going to call out the people who want to defund public education? Anybody?
Can this be a question for the next debate?
