From today’s Town & Country Shopper from my mailbox, an announcement that on June 22nd, the County Commission is holding a meeting on a “potential new sales tax.” Their words, not mine.

Are property taxes even bad in brookings?
The county is probably just greedy. But, local control. If they want it, they can get their people to approve it. Just sayin…
The county doesn’t get any additional funds from this. All sales tax collected must go to property tax reduction for owner-occupied properties.
Well darn. Still doesn’t change the fact that counties are generally greedy. That’s why we need to cut the number in half, to 33 as grudznick’s close personal friend Lar advocates. Way less fatcat administrators. Raze some courthouses or turn them into schools. Some would make neato year-round haunted houses, and lazer tag facilities for the youngsters in town. These towns will need some new businesses, maybe the air beds and breakfasts, to offset the jobs moving to where the new courthouse is. It’s gonna be great.
Reducing taxes on owner-occupied property while raising taxes on rental property and food has got to be the most egregiously regressive tax scheme ever devised.
