This Democratic political strategist invented the polling and reactive skills that targeted clusters of disaffected activism, and molded it into something new through deception and propaganda. He helped to take angry and misinformed clumps of Republicans and Democrats and helped cobble the TEA party movement into MAGA, handed it to Trump and stayed on to fine tune it until his death due to stroke in 2019 at age 68. He was Fox News’ leading former Democrat, and would attend NCPAC meetings to tell the GOP “I left my party for this, you better not screw it up.”
In every movie about a home hostage situation there is always a scene where the crook hides behind the door with a gun, while the nervous resident answers the door to turn away nosy neighbors and police looking for the crooks. Thune and his Congress GOP in both houses perform at the point of severe threat, for the crook Trump. It’s too late to lament the passing of the GOP, this SD convention and how it went is the surest sign that the Grand Old Party is no more. Kaput.

I wrote my long detailed complaint to answer someone who called Russell and Baxter’s big wins “our Liz Cheney moment,” referring to the Wyoming GOP primary of 2002 when they dumped the leading GOP conservative in favor of the state’s leading Trump sycophant. By bringing this up I would say that I agree somewhat and would lump the state’s rejection of Dusty Johnson in the governors race, into the Cheney basket as well. An ignorant waste of available talent and seniority.
Fitzgerald had the momentum at the convention in 2018. But he got mixed up with Russell’s team and Russell sabotaged him, peeps were so mad at both of them for their behavior we voted for Ravnsborg.

To all those criticizing this convention for picking Baxter for SOS and Russell for AG. You have no one to blame but yourselves. Open primary amendment was on the ballot in 2024 and the majority of Republicans voted against it.
Just be happy the legislature was at least smart enough to pass a bill to allow the candidate for Governor to pick his or her choice for Lt. Gov. Imagine if that bill wasn’t passed, what would you think if the convention had made the choice for that instead of Rhoden or Doeden.

The problem with the convention is that we as a party and state allow a person to win a nomination, and thus the office, with support of about 350 people. Out of 321,000 registered Republicans, all you need to do is get 350 delegates to vote for you. It’s a frickin student council election. ‘Those who show up decide’ is what they say. And they’re right because our laws allow this. But I think it’s high time for the rest of us Republicans to say we want a voice and to put these offices on the primary ballot. We have 619,000 registered votes, of which 321k are Republicans, but we continue to allow about 350 people to select our constitutional officers in South Dakota. Time for a change.
The legislature will never change it. They’re too scared of being targeted in the next primary. The only way that change is made is if it’s on the ballot for people to vote on directly.
