Memorable Moments: Honoring Veterans

As I reflect on my time in Congress, I’m reminded of the accomplishments and moments that have made these last eight years so meaningful. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be highlighting some of the work I’m most proud of from my time serving South Dakota and the people who make our state such a special place.

As Veterans Day approaches, I am reminiscent of the men and women who have fought to protect our great nation. I’m incredibly grateful for their service and I thanked as many of our veterans as possible during my time in Congress. Since 2019, I’ve welcomed dozens of Honor Flights to Washington, D.C. and had the honor of thanking more than 1,500 Vietnam-era veterans at nearly 100 Vietnam Veteran Pinning Ceremonies I held across our state.

Our troops, many of them our parents and grandparents, came home from Vietnam but didn’t get the proper welcome they deserved. At each ceremony, I shook their hands, heard their stories, and gave them a belated “welcome home.” Each veteran was presented with a commemorative lapel pin, a lasting symbol of our nation’s thanks. For many, this was the first public recognition for their service they’ve ever received.

Each veteran I have met shared a different impactful story. They come from all walks of life, having served in all branches of the Armed Forces. It has been a privilege to thank these veterans on behalf of a grateful nation.

My team has also assisted nearly 500 South Dakota veterans as they navigate challenges with the Department of Veterans Affairs through casework. Each situation is unique, and my dedicated team worked directly with veterans to help ensure they received the care, benefits, and services they earned through their service to our country.

I will always be grateful for the opportunity to help and recognize these heroes.
