D17 Democrat House candidate Leslie Gerrish apparently took to facebook today to declare to followers she’s a liberal who wants to raise taxes. And if a person who is a homeowner does get tax relief under Governor Rhoden’s property tax program, she thinks people should make huge donations to charity. Because property tax relief equals ill-gotten gains or something?
You know, sometimes the postcards just write themselves. A liberal who wants to raise your taxes. Usually a campaign has to try to convince voters that’s the case and hope the recipient of the campaign material agrees with the conclusion. As opposed to the candidate coming right out and saying it in print.
Which might be why Gerrish took her facebook post down within a couple hours of making the case against voting for her.
This is the same Leslie Gerrish who was managing Jamie Smith’s campaign for Sioux Falls Mayor. Which tells Sioux Falls residents how big a bullet they just dodged.
I can’t wait for her to continue making the case about why voters should reject her.
Says the person whose husband, Dr. Ed Gerrish, is on the faculty at USD and they own the coffee house called The Bean in Vermillion. Hope she plans on giving to charity.

That’s the problem. Liberal, progressive, socialist, communist…people throw together a word salad without knowing what anything means. Tell me you never took a college course in politics. Just like fascist, conservative, libertarian all have different meanings too.
The way people twist themselves when I reply “No I’m not a socialist commie (seriously what is that?). I’m a Liberal Democrat. Not a progressive Democrat, not a Democratic Socialist, a liberal Democrat.”

People act like the GOP platform is still fiscally conservative; come on, we haven’t had that since Eisenhower. The modern GOP platform is to campaign on conservative spending, but then spend double what the democrats would have spent, and just convince the followers the democrats did it.

All of that, and the right is still worried about taxing the billionaires? When we create new billionaires out of purely tax dollars (Palantir, Anthropic, XAI, OpenAI), we have to generate revenue somehow (believe it or not, Mexico is not paying for the wall). I know they will claim these socialist handouts somehow generate GDP growth, but the current economic reality is what we get from it, and it isn’t growth.
And $40 TRILLION debt.
The county commission meeting where this was discussed was full of constituents against it. Gerrish is in line with her community – which I know is shocking to South Dakotans these days, which might explain why you’re posting such an over the top take, Pat. Maybe staying relevant by trying to stir up outrage at other people over nothing isn’t the recipe for success it used to be… 🤷
I mean, to be fair, Clay County is majority renters. The people who want to raise taxes are the Republican majority on the county commission.
