Doeden event in Pierre tonight looking a little light..

So Toby Doeden was having an event in Pierre at the Ramkota tonight..

That crowd is looking a little light tonight in the most political city in South Dakota. Told at least a couple were there because of a legislative meeting in Pierre today.

  1. Light crowd but doesn’t he keep creeping up in the polls? I don’t mean that as positive or negative just an observation. Plus is so early in the process I don’t know how how excites voters arw for all of these events in the middle of the summer.

    1. He has a lot of people around Pierre talking. It was a bad time of night. 6pm is impossible with kids and families.

I can tell he’s gaining traction. Much like Noem, pierre won’t be his strength.

  2. ShadGPT had posted something like Jon Hansen was probably going to drop out and be Toby’s LT Gov?

  3. He’s desperately trying to portray himself as the Trump supporter. I’ll bet Trump doesn’t return the favor. No Trump endorsement.

  4. What were the beverages and meals? Was it just finger sandwiches, or did they have the Ramkota staple of Salisbury Steaks and mashers and brown gravy? That’s the kind of news that if put on their handbills before the event could drive traffic up. I bet Mr. Doeden doesn’t even have handbills, which is why grudznick’s friends in the downtown of Pierre City didn’t hear about this and attend. Stuck with buying their own beers and eating free Bobs popcorn, eh Mark and Jack?

  5. I mean, it looks fine? I was there and wasnt a huge fan of Doeden’s but the room filled up pretty well. Like 10 more people came 15 minutes late. I counted 30 people. Pretty good a year out from the election in a very moderate city and county

  6. Hey Mr. Powers — I really appreciate the work you do keeping a close eye on South Dakota politics and holding our elected officials accountable. Your coverage is always insightful and sharp.

I did want to offer a quick note on your description of Mr. Doeden’s event tonight. From the picture, it looks like the room was nearly full, and when I attended one of his events in Rapid, there was also a strong turnout.

I totally respect your perspective — just thought this might be a small detail worth revisiting. Keep up the great work, Pat. Your blog is a must-read for folks like me who care about what’s happening in our state.

    1. If you’ve ever been to the Ramkota you’d know how big this room his. And then you’d know how empty it is in the photo.

    2. Um… Have you ever been to Pierre? That room is not big, and that group could have been poolside or in the elevated section of the Ramkota bar just as well.

  7. you have to wonder why he thinks he will be “a governor for the people,” when no candidate has ever run as being against the people.

  8. But Toby will be sure to tell you how **electeic** it was (insert eyeroll here)
Knowing nothing about anything in the political arena, then claiming you’ll take it all over, is the fast track to a big L, Toby. When will you figure that out?

  9. Watched his speech from Pierre. Doeden’s monotone sales pitch is getting worse as if he is dragging himself in these stops now. Questions about how he would represent the tribes was a big fail. Will Logan “White Boy Summer” Manhart be his liaison to the tribes?

  10. Breaking news! Rep. Dylan Jordan has officially endorsed Toby Doeden for SD Governor

    1. Dylan Jordan had an event in Sioux Falls with some Ron Paul group think thing. There was zero substance. All he did was repeat talking points and couldn’t answer simple questions. No solutions, only complaints and trying to instill fear. Repeatedly called public schools “government schools”.

  11. I’m no Doeden fan, but as we nitpick crowd sizes, it’s hard to argue he’s not doing all the right things for someone in his position. He’s spending big on advertising to boost his name ID. His stuff looks professional and polished. And his willingness to go around the state and talk to a couple dozen people here and there is smart. Honestly, it’s exactly what I’d be advising someone in his spot to do.

I say this all begrudgingly as I want this guy nowhere near the levers of power and it’s a bit scary to think that he’s making the right moves, but we’re delusional if we think we can just bury our heads, mock him, and not take him seriously.

  12. It’s sad we live in a state where 15% of the Republican Party is gullible enough to believe any of his dishonest, empty rhetoric.

A used car salesmen and slum lord hasn’t provided value or brought in any money from out of state. He’s just been skimming off the top of the people in his own community. That’s the opposite of the kind of business experience we need in Pierre.

  13. South Dakota addiction profiteer Toby’s used car sales pitch hinges on reducing the size of government yet his actions and history contribute to the complete opposite creating more victims and suffering. “The largest video lottery casino in Aberdeen and free drinks!” It is an addiction for profit one stop for everything being the largest except recreational Marijuana which he would probably add too if ever fully commercialized

There would be an abundance of opposition testimonials in future campaign ads plus additional social media posts.
