As I was driving back from Spearfish this past Sunday (celebrating my 34th wedding anniversary), had to make an inevitable stop or two along the way. Which gave rise to something I remembered.
What was that proposal from Jon Hansen from a few years ago?

“I would like to introduce legislation to sell off some or all of our interstate rest areas to private individuals or companies. We currently have 25 rest areas that cost the state tens of thousands of dollars each year to maintain. If we were to sell these prime pieces of real estate, could in one painless action cut at least one-quarter of our budget deficit, along with cutting tens of thousands of ongoing expenses in future years.”
– Jon Hansen. Argus Leader 10/26/10. “
Do you think now that he’s stuck driving a camper back and forth to events, does Rep. Jon Hansen appreciate the Interstate rest stops more than he used to?

Or does he still want to “sell off some or all of our Interstate Rest Areas to private individuals or companies” as “prime pieces of real estate?“

Hansen favors Pay-To-Pee?
“Pay-to Pee” LOL.. I think we all feel obligated to at least buy SOMETHING when you go past the rest stop just beyond Kennebec, and realize you should have gone there, and instead have to stop at Vivian or Murdo.
That was one of Hansen’s big initiatives back then. I’m sure it’s like pipelines, how he used to be for them before he was against them.
Of course, I’m sure there are populists who say “hell no, we don’t need state funded rest stops! I’ll just pull off on the shoulder!”
Maybe he could get pizza ranch to build restaurants on them. Serve pizza and take care of the rest stop. Then the state wouldn’t have to pay for it. Since he spends so much time at pizza ranch….
The federal government doesn’t allow those to be sold, and also very strictly limits private commercial activity at them. This quote is from Hansen’s first campaign for the legislature in 2010 so he probably didn’t know any better.
But what if these potential privateers then tore down those iconic cement tepees as though they were nothing but the East Wing?
Gonna throw out the phrase the Jon and ilk use all the time … Jone is a career politician.
