Flags at Half-Staff at State Capitol in Honor of Lyndell Peterson

PIERRE, S.D. – Today, Governor Larry Rhoden ordered that flags be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol from sunrise until sunset on Monday, August 18, 2025, in honor of former state legislator Lyndell Peterson. He served in the South Dakota State Senate from 1977 to 1994.

Lyndell Peterson will be honored at the Central States Fair on Monday, August 18, 2025.

  1. I still remember the first time I testified in the Senate Appropriations committee, where statesmen like Jim Dunn and Lyndell Peterson held court. I was speaking on a funding bill that impacted counties, whom I represented at the time. Lyndell listened patiently to my remarks and then leaned forward saying “young man I suggest you stand up to the federal government!”

  2. I will never forget what Mr. Peterson said to me as an 18 year old just getting involved in the political world and life really. “Never expect anything of anyone, except yourself”. Great words from a good man and better statesman.

  3. Served as an intern when he was in Senate. He’s the poster child for old fashion “horse sense”. He spoke with few words and great impact
