Governor slams goofy JFM backed “super-tax” as regressive

While ex-Senator Julie Frye Mueller and her false-tax prophets are holding dark mass across the state and directing the highest tax increase in South Dakota history towards those with the lowest income, South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden is calling it “worse than the tax on groceries” in a story this morning from Dakota Scout:

During a telephone town hall hosted by Americans for Prosperity on Tuesday, the Republican governor panned a plan to overhaul the state’s tax system by imposing a flat fee on purchases, calling it regressive and out of step with South Dakota values. He also used the public forum to pitch his own property tax relief plan, which would give counties the option to levy a local sales tax to ease the burden on homeowners.

and..

The $1.50 flat transaction fee was floated earlier this month by former state Sen. Julie Frye-Mueller during a July 16 meeting of the Comprehensive Property Tax Task Force in Rapid City, according to media reports.

Though Rhoden said he hadn’t fully reviewed the plan, he likened it to the state’s tax on groceries — which he described as “the most regressive tax (impacting low-income people the most) in the area” — and argued the transaction tax would be worse.

and..

“I’m not going to support something that I don’t think is well thought out,” Rhoden said.

Read that here.

  1. An extra tax on every gun and ammo transaction. Seems like these folks don’t support the 2nd Amendment. Is there anything “conservative” about them?

    1. There’s always the gun fetishist that has to come crawling out of their hole to say: “won’t someone think about mah guns n’ ammo?”

      1. GOAC should look into how much Rhoden’s travels are costing. He’s campaigning on state time.

        1. For what office? As of today, he’s not running for anything. And then there’s the fact that he’s…..the…….governor. Traveling across the state talking with residents is never a bad thing for a governor to do.

    2. I dont like it because:

Dont want it in the constitution.

Dont want to pay $1.50 for everything.

      A percentage would be better.

I don’t want to pay property taxes though.

  2. It’s the dumbest tax plan I have ever heard. It would only benefit wealthy land owners. Very regressive.
And that Jack ass Eschenbama (a land owner living off his rent collections) is right there with an endorsement. Remember as commissioner, he voted for the wheel tax, voted for 100% health insurance for commissioners and pushed regulations on businesses through ordinances in Hand county. He is absolutely a democrat/socialist. Look at his voting record!!

    1. The entire group that he surrounds himself with, all who claim to have the hand of God on their shoulder, are all democrats at heart. They claim to be this ultra right, pure conservative. But when you look at what policies they push, it’s all liberal and liberal can get.

  3. These far fringe right extremists whether intentionally or unintentionally end up making a strong case for South Dakota to implement a long overdue state income tax.

  4. The Muellers are incapable of thinking out anything well, and Eschenbaum is an idiot, truly a moron, if he hasn’t figured that out by now.

When you first meet people, they might make a good first impression, but after a while you should have them sized up.

    1. If Ms. Frye-Mueller could do math as well as her prettier sister she would not propose these insaner proposals. Mr. Frye-Mueller is just about getting his name in the bloggings. grudznick challenges you to a Freedom Fight, Mr. Frye-Mueller.

  5. So any item under $15…….4.2 percent sales tax + 2 percent sales tax + a 10 percent transaction tax = a combo 16.2 percent sales and transaction tax? Colorado Matt Smith, one of the authors of this craziness was gushing all over Gosch, Odenbach, and Lems when they were doing victory laps on social media and telling us they “saved” us from the largest tax hike in South Dakota history when they voted down Venhuizen’s HB1019 and the Hog House bill that went to the floor from Goodwin that tried to bring it back. That was simply a .8 percent sales tax raise (still less than most neighboring states)that would have saved homeowners from having to pay school general fund taxes.

    1. Previous post correction. 2 percent city sales tax. It’s gonna hurt the mom and pop cafes, coffee shops, etc with a 16.2 percent tax. I like Rhoden’s plan off leaving it up to “We The People.”, in the counties to decide if it makes sense to implement a raise in sales tax to offset property taxes. I can’t believe I used the term “we the people.” I guess I better add the words “Patriot” and “RINO” to my dictionary.

  6. Both plans suck. Rhoden wants to give counties the power to collect sales tax? Counties already get property taxes- I guess they get to keep that and sales tax so when does it stop?
As for Eschanbama’s plan. He’s just stupid. C’mon, we all know the guy is dumber than a box of rocks and now he’s also the SDGOP Chair. What a mess to have the chair of the Republican Party pushing a tax increase using a complex regulatory scheme to extract more money from our pockets, while the highest ranking Republican, the governor, has a plan to allow 66 county board of commissioners to start taxing the SH!T out of landowners. Sad day to be a Republican that believes in lower taxes and less regulation.

    1. The way I understand it, Rhoden’s plan would require the counties to offset property taxes with sales tax, if they citizens of that county voted and approved the sales tax raise. . It would be a replacement tax, not an additional tax.

  7. You must have missed the part where Trump criticized Schumer on social media Saturday evening and told Republicans to pack it up and go home.
