Is Toby Doeden going to require an armed escort at all parades now?

Had this sent to me from the Gypsy Days Parade in Aberdeen…

Is gubernatorial candidate Toby Doeden going to require that he’s accompanied by a plainclothes officer/armed guard at all parades now?

Or only those in his hometown where they know him?

  1. Ha!!! What a pathetic joke!! Real “man of the people“. First with his jet, now his armed private security.

      1. Wait…..Aberdeen Police Department is now providing security to politicians/candidates? Is this for ALL politicians/candidates or just for Toby? Was this part of their budget? Did the city council approve this expenditure?

        1. From what I saw, there police, both local and capitol police walking the parade with candidates and elected officials.

          Both Thune and Johnson appeared to have Capitol police with them while Hansen and Doeden had Aberdeen PD. Police presence was high yesterday both during the parade and at the tailgate.

  2. Tony is not my candidate, but, in this day and age, I really don’t think we should chastise a public figure for taking steps to protect his security. There have been one or two public incidents, but we do not know what other threats or considerations may be involved.

  5. A bit dramatic. We definitely live in a different world but maybe if he wasn’t such a jerk there wouldn’t be threats to worry about. 🤷‍♂️

  7. A fellow that big can clobber most any 69-year-old-woman in Aberdeen. Heck, Mr. Rhoden doesn’t glower like Mr. Doeden, but all know he packs a heck of a gut-punch wallop and leave him alone. If Mr. Doeden just said he’d start clobbering, there would be no need.

  8. Fine, I’ll say what many of us are thinking:

    This is his lame attempt to score sympathy votes in the wake of a tragedy. He’s so low in his own poll he texts about he and his minions are so desperate for attention. Sorry, Toby. That’s not how we do it in South Dakota. In the very unlikely event he is the nominee, I’ll be voting for the Democrat. In the snow balls chance in hell he wins, I’ll sell my house and move. I don’t care if I don’t make anything. Since he doesn’t want economic development in this state, I would advise others to do the same. We’re already behind in GDP and he will make it far worse than it already is.

  9. He might have been his only fan. He walked in the middle of the road waving about 2 blocks ahead. Not exactly engaging with the parade watchers. It was bizarre as he and he and his float walked by. His scowling face on his RV was mirrored by the crowd.

We just can’t predict exactly which q-anon or groyper or yet-unknown freedom-posse is going to get a gun and take pot shots at people they don’t think passes their internecine smell test and loyalty oaths. After her hard work setting up the Jan 6 insurrection went horribly wrong, Marjorie Sporktoe Greene was loudly calling for the GOP to eject all but the most fiercely loyal MAGA. She missed that part of the meeting in 2020 where she was told that would wait til after Trump derails the 2026 midterms. Oops but, yeah.

  12. Stop letting Toby exploit the death of a good man. Because that’s ALL this is. He’s paying Laura Loomer to blast it out for god sake. Come on people, you’re not that blind. This is getting more predicable and definitely shameful by the minute.

  15. I have no issues with politicians having private security, or law enforcement aiding with security. Unless the person has a uniform on, it’s private security. Which this would be. But this guy either needs to go back and take a few classes on how to provide security or it’s nothing more than a prop for Toby. All open carrying does in a situation like this is make you the first target. Other than catching a few rounds first, and giving Toby the chance to run (and let’s think about the reality of that), he’s doing nothing. You can also tell he is wearing a vest under the hoody. You can see the outline of it coming off his shoulders and below his bunched up hood. Sure, that might save the guys life, but he’s still out of the fight after taking a round or two in the vest. A whole lot of energy still gets dispersed into the body. There are also plenty of level III and IV vests out there now that disappear under a hoody. This is either amateur hour or nothing than a political prop.
