The Rehfeldt/Davis bill (HB 1056) to require that the Department of Social Services submit a federal waiver request to exclude soft drinks from the supplemental nutrition assistance program received a letter of support from an unexpected quarter this past weekend – from the White House itself:

WOW.
It’s a little surprising the White House would be against a sitting governor in this kind of high-profile manner.
Why does Rhoden oppose it?
I don’t think he even knows that answer…
The corn growers? They produce the HFCS that is used to sweeten the soft drinks. Maybe that’s why?
Can we hear from them?
Was thinking the same thing. The White House note says “sugar sweetened” but we all know it’s HFCS sweetened.
I asked google AI.
It’s the Corn Growers’ Association and the Corn Utilization Council.
They are not happy with the demonization of HFCS.
That would explain Rhoden’s opposition.
Because it’s a federal program. Congress need to fix it instead of individual states making their own rules and paying for its implementation.
We need more legislators like Rehfeld. Common sense solutions, articulate, intelligent. I hope she runs for higher office. I miss living in D14!
She’s kicking Larry’s butt this session.
Two of the most arrogant legislators we have. Right up there with Will Mortenson. But we can’t say anything bad about these “conservatives”. I mean what’s more conservative then telling people what they can drink. But hey these same lawmakers are ok with people eating fake meat made with immortal cancer cells. Can people buy that with SNAP?
Thanks for your self reflection. I can about guess which caucus you’re in’s
This is such democratic nonsense. It’s what New York pulled a while back. When republicans become so crazed on controlling others they are no longer republicans. Maybe come up with better solutions that actually help people as these two nurses toss their license around as credibility but they’re not kind, not serving the best interest of people, and these aren’t thoughtful plans. Of course they’re supported by an antivax DHS because these two have always been known to do the bidding of whatever gets them the most attention from a higher position so don’t be fooled, they did this for this attention to themselves, nkt the benefit of low income South Dakotans.
no they know that soft drinks have no nutritional value, and cause expensive health problems.
The taxpayers have been footing the bill for this whole vicious cycle of high fructose corn syrup consumption, which causes obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay. We are not only paying for the drinks, we are paying for the results, too.
If you want to destroy your own health, use your own money. It’s that simple.
So will farmers be allowed to buy soda pop after they get their welfare checks from Trump ?
sure, if they use THEIR OWN MONEY.
If I’m paying for your food, you’ll eat what I choose to serve you. Didn’t your mother teach you that?
They do great work.
