From the South Dakota Secretary of State, last night McPherson County State’s Attorney Austin Hoffman registered a campaign committee for running for the Office of Attorney General.
Austin Hoffman for AG by Pat Powers
There’s no press release out for it yet, but it would seem to be an indicator that Austin intends to jump into the contest. Austin, son of former Legislator Charlie Hoffman, and grandson of LeRoy G. Hoffman, a member of the South Dakota Senate and candidate for Governor in the 1978 primary would be the third generation of his family to serve in Pierre, although if he’s successful would be skipping the legislature.
Hoffman is currently a member of the Open Meeting Commission, a position he currently shares with the only other announced candidate, Fall River County State’s Attorney Lance Russell.
Keep an eye on this page, as I’m sure we’re going to see an official announcement in the near future.

Also on the board of elections and one of the only ones willing to stand up to Jessie polly enema and all of sd canvASSing
Would be a great AG!
Would be a great AG!
This is the best news I’ve heard all day!
Go Austin, go!
Great candidate. It’s going to take a lot of work to get the right delegates to convention.
I can hear the righteous delegates laughing
out loud and proclaiming “we’ll never vote him in”. That being said, I’ve sat in on many McPherson county commission meetings, and Mr. Hoffman is as sharp as they come. He stands for the law and isn’t afraid to take on the idiots of our county. He would make an excellent AG! He’s young, talented and South Dakota wouldn’t skip a beat with Jackley no longer in that position. Good luck Austin!
And if those idiots want him out of McPherson so bad they should happily support his AG run. They won’t but they should!
Pierre’s gain would be McPherson counties loss. Who in the world wants to fill the SA position when you have 20-30 people at every meeting “interpreting” the law as they see fit. If this all happens I hope whoever takes over as states attorney borrows Austins big constitutional sledge hammer to play “whack a McPherson county idiot”
Austin Hoffman would make an excellent AG. I hope the delegates can see that he would fight for the Constitution and be a conservative voice that is reasonable. This is great news.
It’ll be super interesting to see what the people in Hansens circle do with this info. He’s clearly not going to get the nomination for governor and as much as he rails on career politicians, he’s never known anything but being one himself. AG might be his only way to try and keep his pearl clutching mitts on Pierre. Austin is a great choice.
Hansen would be a god awful AG. How many bills he has championed have been found unconstitutional?🙄
He has less prosecutorial experience than Jason Ravnsborg did, which was a major point of contention.
You’re right he has zero prosecutorial experience to my knowledge. (I don’t know that for sure). But he may have enough delegates to push him over the threshold when he doesn’t get the republican nomination for governor. These people will be foaming at the mouth to make sure he stays in Pierre I. Some capacity. It would be hilarious if he’d be the AG when the court finds 1052 is unconstitutional!
Prosecution? I don’t think that’s what he would be interested in doing as AG, other than prosecuting women who cross state lines for an abortion.
If Austin fails to get the nomination at the SDGOP convention (if they actually manage to have one) he should run as an independent.
Frankly, I’d prefer serious candidates to simply announce their campaigns and avoid any association with the current SDGOP, at all.
I think a few are going to run as an Independents.
OMG. This is great news. SD Canvass Clowns and the McPherson County Whak a Doodles will probably spontaneously combust 😆. A great choice for the folks of SD. Even the We, the morons, of SD might even spin of to oblivion.
References to Blazing Saddles are always appreciated.
Hopefully Mr. Hoffman cleans up the AG’s office of the toxic abusive environment it has created. Jackley sure didn’t he do anything when he returned to clean it up. In fact he has had more turnover of good employees than Ravnsborg did it’s a toxic mess of environment with clueless attorneys working under him. He should be embarrassed of his office! Hopefully whoever comes in as AG reaches out to everyone that has walked out.
