Gov. Rhoden Secures Additional Funds to Keep Mount Rushmore Lights On Amidst Shutdown

PIERRE, S.D. – Today, Governor Larry Rhoden announced he secured additional funding to keep Mount Rushmore National Memorial illuminated amidst the ongoing government shutdown.

“Mount Rushmore is a beacon of freedom for our state, nation, and the world. Our Founding Fathers pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor to defend American freedom and independence – the least we can do is shine a light on that freedom by keeping our great Memorial lit,” said Governor Larry Rhoden. “I am grateful for the South Dakotans who have stepped up to financially support these efforts. Now, Senate Democrats need to get their act together and reopen the federal government.”

Governor Rhoden previously announced that he and other state leaders began personally funding the evening lights at Mount Rushmore, including a week-long sponsorship by Governor Rhoden. As the shutdown continues to progress, the following individuals have pledged to cover additional days of illumination:

Oct. 30 and 31: Lieutenant Governor Tony Venhuizen;
Nov. 1: First Lady Sandy Rhoden;
Nov. 2: Former Senate Majority Leader Gary Cammack;
Nov. 3: Representative Terri Jorgenson;
Nov. 4: Attorney General Marty Jackley;
Nov. 5: Secretary of State Monae Johnson;
Nov. 6: State Auditor Rich Sattgast;
Nov. 7: State Treasurer Josh Haeder;
Nov. 8: School and Public Lands Commissioner Brock Greenfield;
Nov. 9: Public Utilities Commissioner Chris Nelson;
Nov. 10: Public Utilities Commissioner Kristie Fiegen;
Nov. 11: Public Utilities Commissioner Gary Hanson;
Nov. 12: Senator Ernie Otten;
Nov. 13: Senator Amber Hulse;
Nov. 14: Representative Liz May; and
Nov. 15: Representative Tina Mulally.

Governor Rhoden received many other pledges to support shining the lights should the shutdown continue longer.

          1. If that is the case, then there shouldn’t be any civil unrest and everyone should see their needs are met. This will be hilarious to watch how the Republicans take no responsibility whatsoever.

            1. Republicans have voted to pass the CR. Dumasscrats have voted to close government by voting against the CR. Try to keep up.

  1. How about those hungry kids? The priorities of the Republican Party will never cease to disgust me.

    1. Democrats have been voting no to fund snap and wic, not republicans during this shut down. Sure there are other differences but in this case democrats shoulder the blame for voting no and keeping the government shutdown. Just pass the CR and move forward.

      1. Republicans are extorting them to cave and holding those vulnerable people hostage while they destroy their healthcare and give benefits to the wealthy. The working class is slowly waking up to the destruction of America by the right. Inflation is up. Jobs are down. Prices are up. Dollar is down. There isn’t a single positive economic indicator. No worries, the Trump family has made billions in months exploiting the office of the presidency.

  2. Virtue signalling. That’s all this is. So many better places to put their money rather than this ridiculous theater.

  3. People like the lights shining on Mt. Rushmore. Far be it from any true conservative to tell anyone what they should do with their money. Heck, you can light the faces for the price of a Tally’s Meat Lovers breakfast and tip. I highly encourage all you fellows to light the faces and enjoy a Meat Lovers breakfast.

  4. We are all aware that this shutdown is a problem, but conservatives think in terms of what they can do personally to help, while liberals just want to rant. So while the liberals are ranting, the conservatives are doing what they can to stock the shelves in their local dood pantries.

        Well there’s this

        in Moody County, Carrie Sanderson helps coordinate the partnership of Team Buche Cares and the Flandreau Santee Sioux to distribute food. The Bread Basket in Flandreau is where we have encountered other volunteers known to us through our association with the County Republican Party, Chuck Jones’ mother, Bart Sample’s wife.
        Carrie and Bart are running for the legislature next year, and Chuck served in the legislature and on the County Commission.
        Funny how it works that way, you go in to make a food donation and you run into the same people who go to the county Republican party meetings.

  5. During past shutdowns, the knee jerk performative reaction by the party in power has been to shut down all public accommodations to make the public feel negative effects asap. Why is this time different?
    The party in power this time sees more value in presenting a shiny public face, to show that Democrats “tantrum” has no effect on them, but only hurts the proletariat.
    It is laughable to see all the TRUMP people on TV be confronted by Trump’s own 2011 vow to quickly negotiate and settle these issues if HE was president. Watching Scott Bessent, Sean Duffy and all the others give their lame “hummina hummina hummina” non-answers each time they’re asked why Trump can’t fix this, and what a normal effective President should do. They can’t give an answer that goes against or embarrasses Trump. The white knuckle fear and flop sweat just radiates on the screen.
    UPSHOT: Trump’s plan is to force Democrats to their knees on a no-negotiation “my way or the highway” plan to defund a host of social programs. There is GREAT value in making Trump eat his words, staying the course on voting against the GOP c.r. and teaching this king-baby what power politics is all about.
    Meanwhile Thune and his chorus can keep singing about those “evil Democrats”, who aren’t refurbishing a jet, aren’t aiding Argentina over our domestic needs, aren’t actually physically destroying the White House to build Versailles, and aren’t pretending the economic worsening is “fake news.”

    1. Contd – Will Trump fold? Or will all of us get a good look at how Trump is not like the rest of us, and see new depths of inhumanity that is fully at odds with the populist aims and hopes of grassroots MAGA? Let us see.

  6. Everyone loves to see their name in a headline. Especially anyone that is associated with Noem in some way, although I do not see Sparky listed.
