Rumored AG wannabe Steve Haugaard being featured at South Dakota Freedom Caucus fundraiser

This disclaimer-less ad started hitting facebook this afternoon.

The South Dakota Freedom Caucus (aka, the free-dumb caucus)  – the group which has to hide many of it’s members – is having an event in early February in Sioux Falls featuring former legislator Steve Haugaard. And if you’ve forgotten, Haugaard has been rumored over the past few months to be possibly seeking the office of Attorney General in the 2026 election:

If Steve Haugaard is Phil Jensen, California Carley, Heather Baxter & Dylan Jordan’s choice for Attorney General, it really becomes a hard pass for a lot of Republicans.

  1. Evidently they’ve perfected a way to grab and hold power positions without the help of any Republicans. A neat trick. Leave the party folks. It is a terrible and unfunny joke and it’s dragging you all down with it.

  2. The most insane question to the 2026 cycle is why arent Hansen or Odenbach running for AG?

Hoffman is a strong recruit by the establishment wing. Russell and Haugaard are not first tier candidates for conservatives.

    1. If (when) Hansen doesn’t make it past the primary, I would suspect he will enter the race late. The more from that group that run, the better the odds of the only decent one out the 5 getting the nomination. And that’s Hoffman. Not a fan of how he has handled some things in the past but he’s not scared to make his voice heard and has always been right on his legal guidance. I’ve spoken with him on a handful of issues and he’s always been willing to have a conversation, even if we disagree. And have always hung up the phone smiling. Which is hard to do these days.

    2. The Attorney General is the chief law enforcement officer – the chief prosecutor – for the state of South Dakota. Hansen has less prosecutorial experience than Jason Ravnsborg did – which was a criticism even before he was impeached. (In fact, I would almost go so far as to say that JR’s law career was more remarkable.)

Both Lance Russell and Austin Hoffman are State’s Attorneys, and actually prosecute criminals. If you want an Attorney General who does the job, go with a prosecutor. If you want one that spends their time sending out press releases on abortion.. well, you know the answer to that as well.

    3. If Hansen or Odenbach were to be AG, they may be forced to try and defend possible legislation that these dummies pass. Legislation that they themselves have sponsored and voted for. Losing those lawsuits would be a huge black eye.

      1. And that, right there, is why nobody sane will want the job.
Defending idiotic legislation never ends well
