SD Searchlight: SDGOP chair seeking blind obedience from legislators

South Dakota Searchlight has a new article this weekend on how former 32 year Democrat, now SDGOP chairman, Jim Eschenbaum is demanding blind obedience from Republican legislators, instead of supporting  leadership and representing their constituents well:

For those who pay attention to such things, the dust-ups between traditional Republicans and the new breed have been fun to watch. Eschenbaum seems intent on draining away that enjoyment. It looks like he wants what the Old Guard once had: everyone in the party voting in lockstep with leadership.

And..

To make sure lawmakers are toeing the party line, Eschenbaum has proposed a South Dakota GOP scorecard to keep track of how legislators vote. “I don’t know if the state central committee will decide to do it,” Eschenbaum said, “but it would be based on those three principles, the two constitutions and the party platform.”

And..

Others may think it’s refreshing when lawmakers have the courage to vote their conscience rather than toe the party line. It’s obvious that the new chairman of the Republican Party doesn’t see it that way.

  1. Another scorecard? Who would set it up? Same people from Rapid City who help with other cards? We do not need more destructive, divisive tallies, which have done nothing but divide the legislature by creating hard feelings.

  2. Jane Fonda will fund the scorecard. Dakota Rural Action will write it. And the new Central Committee will vote for it by a 2/3 margin because CO2.

  3. Now that’s an example of a little bit of power going to your head. He should be embarrassed of himself, but he’s too stupid to understand.

  4. Trump: top down bullying sensei. Eschenbaum’s idol. A weak man’s idea of a strong man. Good luck SDGOP.

  5. Well, super! Maybe instead of cherry picking scorecards, people should look at a third party/no interest/good old fashioned CONSERVATIVE scorecard. Jim, et al, might find that Rhoden is actually one of the MOST conservative of all (RTL, NRA, etc., etc.). http://ratings.conservative.org/people?search=rhoden
Go ahead. Click on the link and enter any name.

Establishment (whatever that means) does not make one UNconservative. Some people like to ‘fight’ just to fight. You know, like the Democrats.

  6. Purity test:
    (1) do you homeschool your kids? If no, you’re out
    (2) did you get a Covid shot? If yes, you’re out
    (3) do you use birth control? If yes, you’re out
    (4) do you consume pasteurized milk products? If yes, you’re out
    (5) are you a vegan? if yes, you’re out
    (6) do you own a gun? If no, you’re out
    (7) do you recycle your trash? If yes, you’re out
    (8) are the Ten Commandments posted in every room of your house? If no, you’re out
    (9) do you wear fur or leather? If no, you’re out
    (10) do you own an electric car? If yes, you’re out

I’m sure The Dear Leader will come up with more purity test questions but this is a start

    1. For #10: if my boat is a twin 6.0L, can I stay a Republican if I get the e-Torque option on a new Ram 1500?

      1. I think you need to own a motorcycle, either a Harley or an Indian, to be a True Conservative.
I am not sure about boats.

and I suppose we will have to produce baptismal certificates and affidavits of regular church attendance and tithes signed by our pastors.

  7. The manner in which this blog correctly lambasts local politicians for their populist bent and destructive politics while refusing to discuss the President doing the EXACT SAME THING will never cease to amaze me.

          1. Moving the goalposts from “this blog” to “this article.” Not at all intellectually honest, but ok.

            1. Lighten up, Francis. I don’t remember articles about Biden. Most articles, if national, appear to have a South Dakota connection. For instance, if someone mentioned that the current SDGOP Chairman voted for the Obama-Biden administration twice over Republicans, that has a local connection while referencing national politics.

              1. “I dodged the question and tried to change the subject. Please stop giving me a hard time about it.”

                Ok, buttercup.

            2. You can always return to DFP if you don’t like the way things are run here.

OH WAIT, you cant, DFP is defunct.

        1. Our congress members made the Biden comments. They’re silent on Trump except for infrequent repeats of Trump’s main talking points as they arise.

  8. A scorecard FOR the mentally unstable, BY the mentally unstable.

What a complete joke this GOP is. They should be extremely worried.
