Thune Statement on U.S. Airstrikes in Iran
WASHINGTON — U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) today released the following statement after the U.S. military conducted airstrikes in Iran.
“For years, Iran’s relentless nuclear ambitions, its expanded ballistic missile inventory, and its unwavering support for terror groups in the region have posed a clear and unacceptable threat to U.S. servicemembers, citizens in the region, and many of our allies. Despite the dogged efforts of the president and his administration, the Iranian regime has refused the diplomatic off-ramps that would peacefully resolve these national security concerns. I commend President Trump for taking action to thwart these threats.
“I thank Secretary Rubio for providing updates on these issues throughout the week, and I look forward to administration officials briefing all senators about these military operations. I commend the bravery of the servicemembers carrying out these operations and pray for the safety of those in harm’s way.”

Pathetic. Doesn’t he believe that Congress should have any role in governing? And did he ask Trump to explain why more strikes are necessary when Trump told us a few months ago that Iran’s nuclear capabilities had been “obliterated”? The country really needs him to find his spine
You really need to get with it and find a different source of information.
BUT BUT BUT TRUMP! ORANGE MAN BAD NO MATTER WHAT!
You may want to learn how the constitution works and which branch has the power to declare war. And Thune should therefore do his job!
When was the last time we actually declared war???
The last formal declarations of war were passed in 1942 during WWII.
Congress kind of sort of declared war on Iraq in 2002. It was an authorization to use military force, not a declaration of war..
We might as well acknowledge that the whole idea that Congress should vote to declare war on an adversary, who will not find out about it until our ships appear on their horizon, is a bit outdated.
“Orange man bad!! Orange man bad!! TDS TDS!!”
You guys at the MAGA propaganda shop need a new writer.
TDS
Thune is a weak puppy, sit and stay Johnny. You can go back to sleep now johnny.
“I thank Secretary Rubio for providing updates on these issues…”
Gee… is that what the Constitution requires? Updates?
Unbelievable.
While few will have any sympathy for the government of Iran, killing the leadership of another country opens a Pandora’s Box of troubles. Where does that end and which country and its leadership is next. The country was told last summer that we had obliterated the Iranian nuclear program. Were we lied to? There were negotiations going on between the two countries just this last week and then we attack. What are other countries to think if the US wants to negotiate something?
Looks like Trump loves the Iranian people almost as much as he loves the American people. I look for them and us to see a vast increase in our trouble and pain.
Trump doesn’t want the Nobel Peace Prize any more, since they won’t ever give him one. His peace committee will create its own Peace Prize, and anyone who can pay the billion-dollar application fee will get one.
Extremely weak leadership. Thune needs to nut up.
In case you missed it: Iran declared war on the United States in 1979. Those of us old enough to remember it gave up on Congress doing anything about it years ago.
As for what happens next, Reza Pahlavi has a plan. It’s his country, let him figure it out. It might cost a bunch of our money but it seems the Iranians are pretty happy about this.
I thought I”d see how they were reporting this on al-Jazeera and it seems either they don’t care what happens to the Persians or they are okay with it.
If you’re ok flushing our money down the toilet on this boondoggle, don’t ever bitch and moan about the national debt.
The Iranian government has been causing problems for the neighborhood, supporting attacks on Israel by the Palestinians which result in the refugees nobody wants. Wherever Palestinians go, they cause problems, attempting to overthrow the government of every country they take refuge in .
It’s not really surprising that the editors of al-Jazeera are not as exercised about this as the harpies on The View
And what does any of this have to do with our ballooning national debt?
we’re going to take control of Iran’s oil and make the Chinese pay for it, at inflated prices.. Don’t you understand anything?
You’re joking right? How are we going to do that without putting boots on the ground?
For comparisons sake, in most estimates, Iraq has generated about 1 Trillion in oil revenue since 2003. But the war in Iraq has cost US taxpayers anywhere from 1.7 trillion dollars to 2.8 trillion dollars.
So no, playing Conquering Empire will not make any economic sense.
I understand you just made that up.
As the late Don Imus used to say – if you’re going to lie about WMD to start a war, you better take some with you so the troops can find them when they go in.
I miss Don Imus and Molly Ivins and Dan Royko and Hunter Thompson. Journalists who had no problem calling BS when they saw it. They would have had a field day with Trump, Thune etc. I miss the good old days of independent journalism, instead of the partisan propaganda dreck and pablum slop we’re force fed in the form of “infotainment’ nowadays. Then again have you seen the gams on those F#x news anchors?
South Dakota B1’s reached out and personally delivered custom made packages for the tyrants in Iran over the weekend!!
We went to war in Iran because Israel wanted us to? American blood being spilled for BiBi?
