Thune: Voter ID bill to hit the Senate floor

From FOX News, US Senate Majority Leader John Thune is promising that a voter ID bill will hit the Senate floor, in spite of the minority’s best attempts to block it:

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., is ready to put Senate Democrats to the test on voter ID legislation.

The Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act has earned the backing of 50 Senate Republicans, including Thune, which is enough to break through a key procedural hurdle.

Whether it can pass from the Senate to President Donald Trump’s desk is, for now, an unlikely scenario if lawmakers take the traditional path in the upper chamber. Still, Thune wants to put Democrats on the spot as midterm elections creep closer.

and..

Thune didn’t shut down the idea of turning to the talking filibuster, especially if it ended in lawmakers being able to actually pass the SAVE America Act. But in the Senate, outcomes are rarely guaranteed on politically divisive legislation.

  1. I’m all for voter ID, but I hate the idea of a federally regulated election. If/when Dems take control again, I fear this will open the door wide open to screw up South Dakota elections.

    1. Oh so Republicans screwing it all up good right now isn’t a dealbreaker for you. Good to know.

    2. Your concern is valid. Dems have a tendency to screw up everything they get involved with. Just look at NYC. That sh##show is just beginning.

  2. Still no evidence this bill was ever needed. All being done to placate a guy who still cant accept he lost an election, even after winning the next one. Just childish nonsense that’s going to run afoul of poll taxes unless something changes fast with realid/passport issuing.

  3. This should never have been a priority unless they had proven statistics of voter fraud, which they do not and no one can find any. Waste of my taxpayer money.

  4. The number of morons who think SD Real IDs prove citizenship is staggering. Devil’s in the details, and the details of the SAVE Act will kill GOP in 2026 and beyond.

    1. Yes, and let’s pass it, and when Trump loses again, start working on the next excuse. The Chinese hackers, I bet!

    2. I’m opposed to Voter ID that costs citizens money. Make passports or federal real ids free and I absolutely support this bill. Nice try, slick. You are dodging the point.

  5. We already super-verified and solidified and bona-fide our current id’s under the Homeland Security Act 20 yrs ago. This new SAFE act is pure simple vote suppression and disenfranchisement.
