Toby Doeden attacks data center development in SD, claims only California liberals can work there

Toby Doeden must not think much of DSU cyber program graduates, as in this video, starting around 1:25, he uses scare-tactics to run down data center development, claiming they are only going to hire California liberals to work in data centers:

I mean *it is DSU* but I say that as an SDSU grad doing some good-natured trash-talking. (I’m sure Matt Paulson, a DSU alum who has done quite well for himself in cyberspace would disagree.)

Here’s another problem besides Toby thinking South Dakotans are too dumb to be hired in data center operations. Toby Doeden’s attack on Data Centers flies in the face of President Trump’s data center action plan to make sure that they’re built in America (one of the things even his detractors should not find fault with):

The Plan identifies over 90 Federal policy actions across three pillars – Accelerating Innovation, Building American AI Infrastructure, and Leading in International Diplomacy and Security – that the Trump Administration will take in the coming weeks and months.

and..

“Winning the AI Race is non-negotiable. America must continue to be the dominant force in artificial intelligence to promote prosperity and protect our economic and national security. President Trump recognized this at the beginning of his administration and took decisive action by commissioning this AI Action Plan. These clear-cut policy goals set expectations for the Federal Government to ensure America sets the technological gold standard worldwide, and that the world continues to run on American technology,” said Secretary of State and Acting National Security Advisor Marco Rubio.

Read that all here.

Unless South Dakota has shut our doors for business permanently, we need to welcome data centers AND the jobs and development they’ll bring to our communities.

(Or, we could screw it up like we have with bio-jet fuel and ethanol.)

  1. Doesn’t Toby own a few crypto mining facilities up in Aberdeen? Isn’t that arguably a data center sort?
And isn’t he the same guy who just came out against any economic development funding… But gladly took millions and PPP money?
It’s beginning to sound more like Toby is more anti-anyone else in South Dakota making money but him…
do as I say not as I do, a real man of the people.

      1. Daddy Doeden has made it very clear: he is the money. The money is his. He is the success. He is the business guru (”mofoguru”#iykyk)
He is also very clear: his kids work for him, and they will always work for him. He is the boss, and they are the employees—they may get better titles and treatment than the minions, but Daddy is the boss.

So the crypto mines might be in Jackson’s name (as the entire Doeden family holds multiple LLCs…), but make no mistake, they belong to Toby. Everything is Daddy’s!

      1. It’s pretty easy to see he has built his companies on the shoulders of taxpayers. His words and actions not mine.

      2. Doeden has at least one TIF courtesy of City of Aberdeen taxpayers with an apartment complex renovation on north 2nd street where he promotes the lawn in between buildings (Not a big green space) as a free park to use. Part of that TIF are two apartment building renovations being the same post WW2 style just north of Doeden owned and defunct former historic landmark Scotty’s Drive In on North Main Street. These were still nice and desirable buildings in the 70s and 80s. Very solid with thick walls. He probably makes sure his leasing agents tell prospective renters that the shallow front lawn facing the street of these buildings is a free park for them to use too.

He may have other TIFs too. City of Aberdeen City Manager would be able to tell you. Toby was supposed to be “The Man With The Plan” so why did he need taxpayers to foot the bill on renovation? He wants to benefit from taxpayer money but does not want anyone else to do so.

        1. Other property owners would not ask and burden Aberdeen taxpayers for a TIF. They would just find a way to renovate these rental properties.

  2. He expects folks just to listen obediently and not actually look at his activities.
Based on last year’s primary there a lot of blind followers drinking cool aid in this state, so his plan has merit. 🤦‍♂️

    1. They don’t. All they hear are the buzz words that tickle their ears. I believe there’s a passage in the Bible about getting your ears tickled.

  3. Let’s see. Candidate for Governor Toby Doeden proposes

    * Building a legal wall around South Dakota.

    * Charge out of state tourists and non-residents more for goods and services. Imagine how that will hurt tourism, cross border business from neighboring states e and beyond and the negative impact it would have on future enrollment of college/trade school students.

Now besides dismissing an instate present and future skilled workforce educated at our in state schools he has publicly stated he does not wish to attract or help any businesses that he politically disagrees with. That would seem to include what he and his political extreme fringe core supporters call everyone they don’t like as Democrats, Liberals and RINOs. It would also include those who reject White Supremacy, “White Boy Summers”, Fascism, Promoting a featured speaker at a fundraiser that described themselves as a Black NAZI, Holocaust denialism, Shooting down military, commercial and personal aircraft that they claim is creating chemtrails and other crazy conspiracies.

What Doeden proposes is not only anti-business, anti-opportunity but will solidify South Dakota into becoming a Pariah state.

  4. We should grow our own data centers to manage our tomato operations. 🙂

With Gold Standards for Elections vectoring in hard, I think Toby’s got a fighting chance to win.

Will be an interesting election season, and I encourage everyone to be productive, constructive, and act in good faith.

South Dakota needs that right now.
