Toby Doeden is back in the news willing to Say Anything in his pursuit of the Governor’s office.

The Dakota Scout follows up on a story that I broke on 12/30 how the PAC founded and funded by corporate welfare queen Toby Doeden decided to get involved in the Rapid City Sports Center election coming up by sending out a text blast in opposition to the TIF (Tax Increment Financing) the project would receive.

Nevermind that Toby himself drinks from the same fountain that helped see the way forward for a TIF funded Aberdeen project he directly benefitted from:

Toby Doeden has also used the same government-supported financing tool to fund a development project of his own on the other side of South Dakota.

“Let’s be clear about what this is: corporate welfare. Taking money from taxpayers and handing it to private corporations,” read a text message Dakota First Action that was blasted to Rapid City voters ahead of an upcoming referendum on a tax increment financing district.

Doeden is distancing himself from the Rapid City TIF debate and Dakota First Action.

“Mr. Doeden resigned his position with Dakota First Action early last year,” the campaign said in a statement to The Scout. “Communications from that organization do not constitute the opinions of Mr. Doeden personally.”

Howard told The Scout that Dakota First Action is “a good conservative PAC.”

She confirmed Doeden is no longer directly tied to the PAC but contended there is a big difference between the Libertyland TIF and the TIF Aberdeen authorized for Doeden.

  1. Yes. There’s a big difference between the Rapid City TIF and the Aberdeen TIF. His name isn’t on the check from the Rapid City TIF.

  2. He, like many other MAGA extremists, will seize any opportunity to exploit the political system for their own gain. The MAGA movement is nothing more than a façade, a series of deceitful card games played for personal advantage at the expense of our democracy

    1. Toby isn’t MAGA. He opposes almost everything in Trump’s agenda. He just says anything he thinks will be to his advantage.

      1. Doeden’s TIF stance is 100 percent Trump – it’s the position designed to help put the SD Tea Party / MAGA people in his pocket, whether he believes it or not. Personally, some of us are going to regard the Libertyland TIF vote outcome as a referendum on Trump worship.

      2. Are you living in reality???? EVERY.SINGLE.THING he says or does is meant to emulate Trump. Trump won 70% of our vote. He is saying everything Trump has said. DAILY. The difference is; Trump has real world business experience. Toady does not. They are WORLDS apart. Toady (and his supporters) just doesn’t realize that.

        1. Yes, he tries to “emulate” what he considers to be MAGA, saying anything he thinks might get him elected. His only true position an any issue is “what’s in it for me”.

  4. His TIF is not for the betterment of anyone except Doeden. His welfare check did not subsidize rent rates. They lowered his development costs and made more money.
    I have a different question. Who audits the expenses when a TIF is used? How do the funds get categorized? If a company gets a TIF and uses a company they control for services and supplies there is plenty of opportunity for fraud.
    Doeden got his TIF and used a bunch of his people from other LLC’s to do labor and buy materials. Im not saying anything illegal went on but it smells funny.

    1. The auditor of the government entity that issued the TIF audits it, so either county auditor or city finance manager.

  6. Other Aberdeen future and present rental property owners more than likely could have purchased that property package and fixed them up without asking for a TIF from the City of Aberdeen. Those are solid well constructed buildings. Renovations would take longer but it could of been done. It’s not like it has not been done before with many rental property owners.

  7. With the Doeden campaign really struggling it would be a great time to call up former North Carolina Lt. Governor Mark Robinson to South Dakota and help Toby with his campaign whether he likes it or not. Toby needs help bad! Mark I’d imagine could use the money no matter who is paying him. Mark has the experience and could teach Toby a thing or two.

    1. There’s one guy I wish would hang it up. Quit embarrassing yourself, your constituents, and the state as a whole, and go enjoy retirement. It’s beyond sad how worthless he is in the legislature.
      Why doesn’t Aberdeen see that?
