The goofballs at the Toby Doeden campaign must be diverting all their money to trying to fill their petition signature quota at the last minute.
Because there’s no one working policy, and Toby is still going on about his eyeroll-worthy claim that he’s going to create a Department of External Revenue to bring in Billions no one has happened to notice in the state’s 136 year history.
Even more, after months of claiming he can do this, it still has no specifics in all the time he’s been slinging that BS.
The Department of External Revenue? That dog just isn’t going to hunt.
It most likely apes a proposal that Trump had a year ago to “to collect tariffs, duties, and all revenue that come from foreign sources.” Which the President of the United States can conceivably do, since al of those things are in the federal purview.
But the Doeden dumpster-fire local version? Where would Toby be collecting the made-up billions of “external revenue” from as he describes in his vague, unexplained talking point?
The only place could be those businesses and people from other states doing business here. And taxing them any differently has long been deemed unconstitutional under federal law. Going to Google AI for a quick summary, (since I don’t have a Constitutional Law attorney on speed-dial):
The Dormant Commerce Clause is a U.S. Supreme Court legal doctrine inferred from the Constitution’s Commerce Clause (Article I, Section 8), which prohibits states from passing legislation that discriminates against or excessively burdens interstate commerce. It preserves a national market, preventing “economic Balkanization” or protectionist measures by individual states.Key Principles and Purpose
- Prevent Protectionism: States cannot enact laws designed to benefit local businesses at the expense of out-of-state competitors, such as discriminatory taxes or bans.
- Prohibit Undue Burdens: Even nondiscriminatory regulations may be invalid if they burden interstate commerce excessively relative to the local benefit
- Implied Restriction: It acts even when Congress is “dormant,” meaning federal legislation has not been enacted.
Now, there is an exception noted:
Exceptions:
-
Market Participant Exception: States may act as a buyer or seller—rather than a regulator—to favor their own citizens, such as in state-run businesses.
And except for the state deciding to compete with the private sector, there’s no way that Toby’s made-up plan can legally allow him to tax anyone in other states any differently than the way South Dakota already does it.
Fake plan. Fake talking point. No supporting plan, explanation or documentation.
I have no doubt that this isn’t the only made up hash Toby Doeden is going to be slinging on the campaign trail.
Just remember that early voting begins in about 3 weeks. And this guy should not be on your consideration list.

Tubby is running out of time to develop coherent messages.
Tubby is also running out of time to gather nomination petitions. It would be funny if he spent millions of his own money and didn’t get on the ballot.
That would be pretty awesome
Maybe if Toby’s campaign staff are still scrambling for petition signatures. They could go to the No Kings Protest in Aberdeen tomorrow. Desperate times call for desperate measures. I’m sure they could find people there that dislike Dusty Johnson and Larry Rhoden.
He’s had a year or more to figure this out. He has numerous legislators who endorsed who I would assume could’ve used their experience to come up with policy making on this stuff. Maybe they’ve been too busy grandstanding instead?
I hope… I really hope that the public sees through this and the car salesman tactics.
Hit the nail on the head. I don’t agree with Katie all the time – but she is right, Toby is a used car salesman
He’s a complete phony. I hope our voters don’t mistake this guy for a viable candidate.
Considering this country elected Trump I have no faith in the intelligence of the SD voters
Same Tobes we have unfortunately experienced for years and why so many dislike him so much. He will say and claim anything to make a sale.
Remember when he claimed he was the hardest worker? The complete opposite! That was a good laugh and classic Tobes!
Our perspective is Slacker = Toby Doeden. A slacker is an informal, often disapproving term for a person who habitually avoids work, effort, or responsibility. They are seen as lazy, underachieving, or unmotivated, doing the bare minimum to get by.
Buyers and voters Beware!
It’s good to hear from people who know him for who he is and live in his community. Nobody I’ve heard from that lives in his community not only has nothing good to say about him, they talk about him with disgust. I’m listening to those who know him.
Just need to go to any post on the Aberdeen News FB page. Loads of terrible stories.
He posses a real threat to establishment repubs. His message, although incoherent, appeals to a lot of the primary voters. He is going to make the election very interesting.
Incoherent? It’s nonexistent. He has absolutely no answers when pressed on details. None.
The only thing Doeden offers is being the obvious prime candidate for the Dem nominee. He would be a gift.
If by miracle Doeden were to be the nominee and somehow win the Governors race surrounding states would benefit from the chaos this moron would bring. He would set an even new low. If many South Dakotans think scandals have become normalized in the executive branch wait till he and his Freedumb and conspiracy consumed Libertarian nutballs get in. Brain drain would be supercharged from the state.
He should challenge Hansen’s signatures. That would be a fun media circus to watch
Not a Forden fan, but it’s possible. We have about $800 billion in South Dakota investment houses taking advantage of our weak trust laws and doing nothing for South Dakota. A 0.1% tax on them would not be noticeable to them but would generate $800 million in revenue. Even one basis point would be $80 million.
And not affect South Dakotans at all!!
If that was done, the money would move out of state before the ink was dry
Where would they go?
They’d go to Wyoming and Delaware. And also following them out the door would be a few thousand CPAs, estate planners, attorneys, Trust Officers, and other specialized financial services jobs. Downtown Sioux Falls would be gutted.
And they’d all close shop and move to Wyoming, who are doing their best to copy our trust and financial privacy laws. This would be the golden opportunity for them to steal that business.
Dumbass.
So much effort put into denouncing this guy. makes ya wonder
Pol Pot sure has a bunch of negative stuff written about him. Must be a conspiracy. Seemed like a great guy.
How many sigs has he gotten?
My guess is he probably has enough signatures needed to get on the ballot. I’m guessing he’ll probably will turn his in on Monday in Pierre. KELOLAND I’m guessing likely reached out to him to insure he has the signatures or else they would probably boot him from the debate on Tuesday.
If Tubby delivers petitions on Monday, that doesn’t give the SDSOS enough time to verify the signatures before Tuesday’s debate. KELOLand will look like chumps if they put him on the debate and we find out he didn’t make the cut. But the bigger chump will be Tubby.
What? Using facts to point out malarky? You must have Doden Derangment Syndrome. He’s the most popular politician to ever run for office, and if he loses, it will be because everyone else cheated.
Biggest fraud ever. We’ll even try to pass a law about it. SAVE South Dakota act. It’ll be huge.
YUGE.
We see Toby’s new campaign video on facebook cosplaying wrenching on a vehicle up on a hoist as if he has a background in it and knows what he is doing getting his hands and face oily and dirty. There was a shot of wiping the sweat off his face from removing an oil plug. The automotive techs probably had to show Toby where that was prior to the shots. Here is the tool Toby that you use. Hold it like this and turn.
#1 We cannot imagine Toby ever getting his hands dirty from manual labor.
#2 We cannot imagine Toby knowing more than what a dipstick is and window washer refill cap is.
What next? Toby cosplaying a carpenter? Professional painter? Railroad track maintenance crew member?
Just saw Doeden’s closing debate remark. We’re in the worst month of Donald Trump’s entire presidency – he has proved how utterly out of his depth he is, we’re burning through all our military assets at breakneck speed while the nation is beyond bankrupt. Doeden doesn’t think voters have noticed this.
It takes magnificent amounts of guts to ignore this and keep telling the world that a businessman is better than a “career politician.” All I know about “career politicians” is that if you’re good at politics, you’ll have a long career, the bad ones should be voted out and mostly they are. All I know about “career politicians” is that they have experience and deep knowledge needed to GET THINGS DONE. Every amateur and newby in politics spends all their time either learning about the job, or running smokescreens while they grift like Trump.
Has anyone got an answer from Doeden about where these tens of thousands of jobs he created that he signed paychecks for? He has been asked many times but never answers this. He is so full of baloney!
