Toby Doeden worries more about needing sports than academics, bragged about flunking out of 2 colleges in newspaper column

I just had a legislator forward this to me.. and it’s very eye-opening about what a Doeden administration would bring to South Dakota’s test scores and the future of South Dakota’s school kids.

Don’t worry about test scores, because that’s not what’s important to Toby. What’s important are the quality of our coaches.

and..

and..

(All of this was in the Groton Daily Independent from Wednesday November 13, 2019.)

“The athletic culture in the Groton Area School system is broken. It’s broken. It’s absolutely broken, and anyone that doesn’t believe that is either in denial, is part of the problem, or worse yet, incapable of seeing something so obviously negative happening right in front of their eyes.”

“I’m not here tonight to cast blame, though there is plenty to go around. Administrators are to blame, teachers are to blame, coaches are to blame, and parents are to blame, including me.”

“..my lackluster high school GPA and flunking out of not 1 but 2 colleges proves it. High School was simply a necessary step for me.”

“I can’t be clear enough on this point, just participating in sports is not enough. Just offering sports to the kids is not enough. Just filling coaching vacancies for the sake of filling coaching vacancies is not enough. Just having administrators focusing primarily on academics is not enough.  If we can at least agree that athletics plays a large role in developing and preparing students for life, then we need to act like it. We need to stop acting like sports is a privilege, because they are not. Sports are a necessity.

Well,  Not sure that bragging about flunking out of 2 colleges is what I immediately go to for a Governor.

And maybe if some of the elected politicans would quit trying to strip money away from all that reading, writing and arithmetic, then we could figure out how to fund Toby’s coaching dreams.

  1. Knowing that this will cause wailing and gnashing of teeth even more than my comparison of doeden to Biden, I’ll say this anyway because I can’t help but notice that hitler pushed athletics over academics as well to the point that kids didn’t learn anything.

No, I’m not saying he’s hitler.

But I will say that he being the closet libertarian candidate, and seeing how far right they all are, and the numerous concerning votes and stunts they’ve all pulled this year and the amount of deceit he puts on voters… I’m deeply concerned of what level of anarchy they’d implement if he wins.

    1. “Dusty, Doeden, and Larry all like dogs and want to grow the economy? Hitler/Biden/Evil Character Number Seven liked dogs and promised to grow the economy too!”

Katie, you are the single largest reason I will be voting for Larry and not Jon in June.

    2. Stop bashing Fox Straw-man Biden, and really try and find out what the real Biden was like. He was a God fearing good man, who handed Trump the strongest nation on earth only to watch Trump burn it down and squander it on wars and ballrooms. He’d sure make a better Republican than the confederacy of MAGA calling everyone they don’t like a RINO every day. God bless President Biden, if he wasn’t good, Trump would parade him around instead of trying to destroy him.

  2. Now i understand why he loves Jordan so much. They are both are both idiots who barely made it out of high school. To Toby’s credit, as least he tried college. Jordan was too stupid to get into college.

  3. Someone else must have composed Doeden’s manuscript to the Groton Area School Board. If you look at his old infamous social media posts including those that Aberdonians took screenshots before exploring a run for office he communicates like a cave man.

    1. Did Toby get ejected from a high school game as a student athlete. parent or spectator? Where? Which team and who were they playing? Any video?

  4. So what was wrong with the Groton high school sports program in 2019, not winning enough? IiRC Groton’s football team didn’t win a game until Toby’s senior year and even then it was a losing season.

  5. Toby Doeden is a sad commentary on the electorate the GOP has cultivated in our state. What a perfect example of the “something for nothing” mentality is his “getting rid of property tax” fairy tale. Our part of the state is short on entrepreneurs.  Many of our children with initiative and hutzpah get an education and leave the state for greener pastures, leaving our communities vulnerable to predatory smooth-talkers like Doeden. I wonder how successful in business he would be if he had a little competition?

    1. …and yet he has managed to build a life that allows him to fly in a private jet, live in a mansion outside of town, and run one of the largest businesses in Aberdeen all while others look down their nose at the way he got there. And fund a governor’s campaign with his own money.

If his campaign has miscalculated at all it’s that most SD voters are not unhappy with their government. SD is not DC. And I don’t know if the voters he’s targeting are likely to show up any more than the 18-35 year olds will show up for Dusty.

Hansen and Rhoden appear to have struck a nerve with traditional primary voters, and their numbers are likely underrepresented in polling.

  6. Toby “Doughboy” Doeden is big on athletics?

Must have lettered in the hotdog eating contest.

Unlike our current governor I guess he at least tried college. Kudos for that. Our previous governor got an honory bachelor degree in polisci. Now you know all you need to about why South Dakota is declining.

  7. “Our previous governor got an honory bachelor degree in polisci.”

Let me help you out here:

“Noem resumed her education. She took classes at the Watertown campus of Mount Marty College, South Dakota State University, and online courses from the University of South Dakota. Balancing her congressional duties with her studies, she completed her degree in political science in 2012 while serving as a U.S. representative.”

“Noem received an honorary doctorate in public service from South Dakota State University in 2025”

Maybe you should know what you are talking about before trying to take a cheap shot at someone who outclasses you in every way.

    1. The honorary doctorate degree was from Dakota State (Madison) not SDSU. A thank you gift, if you will, for helping them establish their cyber program initiatives while she was governor.
