Uh oh. Word on the street it that the Minnehaha GOP Lincoln Day Dinner event this weekend is somewhat… radioactive.

I’m hearing that ads are being pulled or not placed because of the event’s association with the controversial speaker.
One candidate today was asking their consultant.. “you didn’t place an ad for the GOP dinner, have you?” Not that people were rushing to line up for the event, but nobody wants to be seen as supporting the event featuring a former congressman accused of sexual misconduct.
I’m sure we’ll hear more about the event later.

Remember another event similar to this one with the featured guest Mark Robinson?
The latest from MAGA world is pure gold: North Carolina’s former Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson—the guy Trump once called “Martin Luther King on steroids” and “better than” MLK—has finally admitted he lied about those wild CNN reports during his failed 2024 governor run.
Robinson confessed on a podcast that he had an “obsession” with porn and sex, and yeah, some truth to the old forum posts on Nude Africa where he called himself a “black N*ZI!”, praised Mein Kampf as a “good read” and “real eye opener,” supported bringing back slavery, trashed MLK as a “commie bastard,” and gushed over transgender p*rn.
He flat-out denied it all while running for governor, whining it was “salacious tabloid lies” and “not us. These are not our words. And this is not anything that is characteristic of me.” But now? He says he’d “make the exact same decision” to lie again because “President Trump and I had become very good friends,” and he didn’t want to “cost the president of the United States the election.” He even admitted: “If I had to ignore the truth at that moment for their expediency, I felt like it was the right thing to do.”

Ignoring truth is its own reward. When Fox repackages stuff as truth to help Trump, everyone can taste the original ingredient. Kind of a piquant after-bouquet ala diaper.
I bet Tobes shows up with petitions to sign.
Probably with all kinds of gift cards to get those signatures. Listen! This is just between you and me ok?
The Minnehaha County Republicans chairman is a convicted felon?
Just kidding but not exactly… Minnehaha County went rogue years ago. .
What a bunch. In 2016 they wanted to send nothing but Ted Cruz supporters to the national convention, and snuffed out the aspirations of the county’s Trump supporters. They didn’t support Trump then and I doubt they do now.
,In 2020 they were noticeably absent from the virtual convention anchored in Sioux Falls. In 2022 they attended the state convention but voted against the resolution endorsing the winners of the primary.
Minnehaha County has always been loosely tethered to the state party and sometimes they have been in opposition to it.
There was a time when the Minnehaha County Lincoln Day Dinner was a really fabulous event, black tie in fact, everybody dressed to the nines, and they featured prominent speakers people actually wanted to listen to. The city’s proximity to Iowa was another draw during presidential election years.
And now, even local candidates don’t want to show up. Anonymous @ 6:49 pm, you should buy a ticket. You’ll be surprised by how much you have in common with them..
The support for Cruz in 2016 was strictly driven by the bubble of religious voters who hated Trump for sincere moral reasons and saw Cruz as the only viable non-establishment alternative, which became the lone alternative after Trump and Cruz drove everyone else out.
Before Trump was even a thing, Rush Limbaugh had declared on national radio that In a general election, there was zero path to Cruz becoming President, kind of tossing his backhanded endorsement to Trump.
I think your Trump / Cruz analysis isn’t apt.
Upshot: Trump is golden and beloved in spite of the worst truths being exposed. Robinson and Cawthorne are ruined and tainted, because only Trump gets to sin with no repercussions; Robinson and Cawthorne don’t have Fox propping them up as a King-David / Croesus / Einstein / war hero every day, only Trump has that, and he is none of those things of course. Good PR is everything nowadays.
If people sit out because these lesser gents aren’t Trump himself, then it’s an honest reaction inside the dishonesty of the curated narrative we’re presented with.
If they support Trump why are they so opposed to his agenda? Why didn’t they get vaccinated as Trump recommended?
Why aren’t they supporting the only gubernatorial candidate who was Trump’s guest at the Superbowl?
So many questions for you to ponder!
Not sure I agree with your analysis here, but funny aside: Cruz won the Iowa primary in 2016. Trump got second. Trump claimed voter fraud in the Iowa 2016 primary. No joke.
The thing I left out is that Rush felt compelled to speak because of Cruz’s rise among the TEA Party Republicans, and was eclipsing Jeb and Rubio and other GOP who could draw bipartisan support against Hillary in the general. Rush had research showing Cruz had no bipartisan possibilities at all and shared his opinion on air. The stage was set for Trump to cash in on the general GOP mood that nobody was a sufficient scrapper, after Romney / Ryan’s failure. Trump swooped in and wiped the floor with everyone but Cruz, who got the support of everyone who had moral grounds to reject Trump. Hillary was ill prepared for a strong Trump bid, and she lost. Regardless of the party’s official effort to back Cruz against Trump, they all actually wanted a Trump to “drain the swamp”, “repeal Obamacare” etc etc. Well, they got him. We all did. As predicted he broke his promises, or made keeping the promise a golden theft event for himself. RE: anti-vaxxers mentioned earlier, Trump made anti-vaxxers welcome in MAGA by blaming COVID problems on Fauci and stoking wacky conspiracy theories, embracing RFK Jr, etc. of course he himself took the shot, he’s not completely stupid. RE: mention of Dusty – he can campaign for himself.
I miss the days when the republicans actually had values and respect. How does a one-term congressman, who got incredibly lucky to win a seat, accomplished nothing except ensuring he does not get reelected, then get paid to be a headline guest for the state’s most populous county? In this era of digital media in our face 20 hours a day, it seems that the skill of manipulation is more valued than the skill of governing, within government. For most of human history, pragmatism and oration were the skills of valuable leaders, until the boomers came along, now it is how much internet fame and “fox news” clout you can get, actual skills are secondary. So much for that meritocracy…..
