Rhoden for Governor Unveils “Did the Right Thing” Ad

Pierre, SD – Today, the Rhoden for Governor campaign unveiled the “Did the Right Thing” ad. The ad features State Senator Amber Hulse and emphasizes how Governor Larry Rhoden delivered the largest property tax cut in South Dakota history.

“The largest property tax cut in South Dakota’s history would not have happened without Larry Rhoden’s leadership,” State Senator Amber Hulse says in the ad. “He put aside politics and did the right thing for the people of South Dakota.”

Senator Hulse points out that the average South Dakota homeowner will see at least a $1,000 property tax cut on their home – 30% or more in total relief in counties that adopt the local option provided for in SB 96.

“In the Legislature – and in life – all you have is your word. I think Larry embodies that,” concluded Sen. Hulse. “Larry Rhoden delivered that relief that families need here in South Dakota.”

The gubernatorial runoff election is July 28, 2026.

  1. In my own case, if my county were to pass SB 96 along with SB 245, I would save about $1200 on my property assessed at about $350,000.
I would have to spend $150,000 per year in goods and services to pay that additional amount in sales tax.
Yes, owner-occupied folks will do well with this, without pushing the property tax burden onto other classes of property.
And yes, renters will see more on their sales tax without the benefit.
That additional amount is 80 cents on a $100.00 purchase.

Now let’s look at the proposal to eliminate property tax. This 0.8% sales tax increase could reduce owner-occupied property tax by about 30%, so you would have to triple that revenue amount just to eliminate the property tax on the owner-occupied class.
This still wouldn’t touch agricultural or non-owner-occupied/ commercial.
Where does that additional revenue come from to eliminate them.

Also, if we eliminate property tax and distribute the monies from the state level, how long until the state starts to look at the need for a school in Lanford, close to Groton, Britton, Webster?
Or Warner, only 10 miles from Aberdeen?
Or Waubay, only 10 miles from Webster? or Summit, only 10 miles from Waubay?
Property tax does allow for or local schools, fire departments, sanitation districts have control over their own funding.

    1. Voters are not looking for a fake looking, pumped up lips type of person – we all had that with Kristi and how well did that go. Be smarter Larry.

  2. If Governor Larry Rhoden loses in the primary runoff will Senator Amber Hulse be in a Doeden commercial with previous shots of her at the Doeden campaign kick off up in Aberdeen and wearing her Doeden for Governor T-shirt?
