The big issues that Dusty Johnson has been hitting on in his race for Governor have been the sales tax increases passed this last legislative session, with proceeds being shifted over to reduce property taxes for homeowners.
Governor Rhoden had been the sole target of Johnson advertising on the issue. But with an ad released to twitter tonight, Gubernatorial wannabe Jon Hansen is now being named and included in the Johnson campaign’s advertising as being responsible for upcoming sales tax increases:
As of yet, the Hansen campaign’s efforts to raise money at Pizza Ranch have not been successful enough to put Hansen on the air.
With FCC public files not appearing to show Hansen as having made anything in terms of ad buys to date on either TV or radio, it’s unclear where the campaign is going to go in the last thirty days. Except nowhere fast.

Hansen uses his funds wisely and effectively. He has such broad support, that wasting funds on ineffective advertising just isn’t something he needs to do.
Then I’m guessing he’s not knowledgeable enough to know that’s just not accurate. Unfortunately, these ads are necessary to be competitive. And unfortunately, they’re very expensive.
So if he does get enough to run a few, will you say those funds are still not wisely spent?
Hansen misused the funds donated to the Life Defense Fund to defeat 100% pro-life politicians who wouldn’t support him as Speaker.
Those funds were donated to fight abortion, not advance Jon Hansen’s career.
don’t tell us how he is using “his” funds wisely.. Tell us where he got the money.
grudznick’s close personal friend Lar, a one-time Libertarian just like grudznick, would say “funny Mr. Dusty is proposing using the same sales tax automatic increase dollars for his own temporary property tax rebate program.” Then Lar would say “en it.” Or if Lar had a better handle on the language, he’d say “en ah.”
Regardless, it seems like Mr. Dusty is confused.
It’s okay, Hansen will just have Karla buy him some more bot likes on his Facebook posts and polls to claim he’s gaining traction and “surging”, to make himself feel better.
Pathetic loser!
(Check the likes people! Check. The. Likes.)
The tax shift perpetuated by this past legislative session is BS! Regressive tax increases to benefit wealthier people.
Hanson voted for them! With his shoot first ask questions later approach to economic development, all he would do is increase and shift taxes and fees to fund the state.
Bad policy from Jon Boy.
Dusty is clearly a fraud. Before he took it down, the same tax Larry passed was advocated by Dusty. Sad that DC made such a fake out of Dusty. There’s a reason why 2/3 of GOP won’t vote for him
Lee, you have Dusty Derangement Syndrome.
Larry signed three sales tax increases.
Three is much larger than one, and you know it.
Larry didn’t sign any tax increases.
One of them is pledging the 0.3% sunset of the sales tax – the same funding mechanism Dusty proposed.
The other two create local options to shift between sales and property tax.
Call them shifts if you want. They are not increasing the total tax collected.
Are we really going to elect a governor whose #1 campaign message is a half-truth about his opponents?
Tax was 4.2% …. in July, it’ll be 4.5%. If counties (etc) choose to take advantage of the other increases now available thanks to Rhoden and Hansen (which I expect they will), taxes will be even higher.
How can you argue tax hasn’t increased?
I suspect that he’d argue that them making the tax increase available doesnt mean they increased the tax, but rather the counties did. I think it’s a bs dodge, but you asked.
Even if every single county and city opt not to use the tax increase options now available (yeah right), the tax base rate is still increasing from 4.2% to 4.5%. Regardless of the reason why it’s increasing, the fact is it IS increasing, and it’s increasing under Rhoden’s and Hansen’s tenure.
I dont disagree woth you, but I think it’s important to address the “logic” of people being disingenuous.
Chris Karr caused this
By the way, I agree with you that it’s a BS dodge.
Wow, going straight to the “f” word, Fraud. Dusty is no fraud.
You claim he’s a fraud, which erects a fake strawman. He is technically correct on his facts. Rhoden claims Dusty tells stories about a broken wreck of a state, also untrue, another strawman. Dusty is pointing out areas of concern, which can be improved. Hanson and Doeden pretend like Dusty is the reason we’re trillions in the hole, and not Trump or Doge or Mike Johnson. Also wrong.
For a long time, before Trump and during Trump, Dusty was and IS a better Republican on his worst day, than any of you are on your best day. He’ll be not only good but excellent as Governor. That’s a fact.
Seems your sleuthing skills need some work. Hansen looks to be on TV now.
Dusty has always been transparent. Lee, you only like people you can tell what to do. Fortunately, Dusty doesn’t listen to you which is why he will have my vote. You not liking me makes me like him more.
Lee didn’t like Kristi because she didn’t listen to him.
Lee doesn’t like Dusty because he won’t listen to him.
Lee likes Lee.
There are myriad reasons to dislike Noem. His take on Dusty is terrible.
So true Senator! Dusty is a liar and a fraud—you’re only wrong in saying that he wasn’t always this way (he was and has been)
Lee is 100% correct on this. The level of smarmy duplicity by Dusty in bashing his own originally touted proposal is disgusting.
3 is not the same as one. It’s not hard to understand.
I was wondering why Jon has been getting a free pass! Rhoden didn’t pass this tax shift all on his own. People need to know Hansen had just as much to do with it as Rhoden.
It was a team effort between Rhoden and Hansen
Back room deals.
Absolutely right. Team effort, back room deal. South Dakota deserves better.
The odd couple
Those negative ads on tv bad mouth every legislator in Pierre every time they are played on tv. We don’t appreciate it Dusty. You not only attack Larry and Jon you attack the entire legislature and the people of South Dakota that begged for property tax relief.
Last year, they begged for property tax relief. Next year, they’ll beg for sales tax relief. The reason is because they never got a cut! They only got a shift. A shift doesn’t give them relief.
If I seem to remember, last year Tim Goodwin tried to hoghouse Tony V’s property tax reduction bill, in the 11th hour, that was way less regressive than the 3 bills that were passed this session by Hansen. The Hansen camp immediately came out last year (Gosch, Odenbach, etc) and were doing victory laps and bragged about voting “no” and saving South Dakota from the largest tax hike in state history. Now they are doing victory laps for raising taxes this year……….What changed?
What changed is the sponsors of the bill. If Tony V does it, it’s evil. If Hansen does it, it’s holy. That’s the difference.
Mr. Venhuizen does look a bit like the Devil hisownself. And that’s a high compliment from a Witcher like grudznick.
‘We just defeated the largest tax increase proposal in State History. SB 169 (as amended) would have increased sales tax by $240 MILLION on all South Dakotans. I am proud to stand with the other names in RED”. Here is the receipt. Exact words from Spencer Gosch last session on social media. Odenbach, Hansen, Lems all sharing this on Social Media and their supporters were just gushing over them for defeating it. What Hansen did this year to Sales Tax will pale in comparison to Tony V’s plan last year. Such a hypocrite.
Are state and local taxes really what “likely voters” in the primary are concerned about? Serious question here. With voter turnout in the primaries always low, the only issues that matter are whatever concerns the 100,000 voters who bother to show up.
The two debates I listened to, the questions asked about restoring civility in politics told me that when asked what they were concerned about, many respondents couldn’t think of anything, so they said they were worried about civility in politics. Were these the “likely voters” who were polled?
John only picked Karla Lemps for her I’ll gotten money. But it’s ok Karla came by it unethically, it was done in the name of Jesus!
I thought she inherited her money. What’s unethical?
Did you notice that the “Not Dusty” PAC most recent ad – uses an AI-cloned Rhoden voice for the content. Dirty. Really scummy. To borrow Rhoden’s voice and use it against him isn’t cool. Isn’t there a federal law on that? Someone needs to look into that.
100%. That’s really dirty!
That ad is from a different outside group than the first negative ad. I have been told the school choice people are behind the most recent one. Lots of folks irritated with Larry.
Since they were so concerned about the laws passed this session, they should’ve looked at the “deepfake” bill that passed last year. If proven, it’s a Class 1 misdemeanor. SDCL 12-26-33. I wonder if the AG will prosecute. 😉
Jon will cut public school funding and demand your wives go back to the kitchen.
To be fair, any “solution” to property tax and sales tax relief will end up there too. All four will continue to shell game it.
Has anyone seen Tony V? He doesn’t seem to be helping Larry.
Dusty is playing chess while team Larry plays checkers.
I think he’s busy writing his memoirs and trying to find the best location for Larry’s statue where he can put a smaller one of himself in the shadows behind.
If you are looking for one more reason to send Hansen to the trash pit, he appointed anti South Dakota Karla Lemming to the Commerce and Energy Committee as Chairman.
Well, it seems Dusty is upset that someone stole his once good idea and now he sees it as a bad idea. They actually acted on his once good idea, but now it is bad, go figure. He should be applauding the fact that they took the ball and ran with it and not making the citizens of the state wait for another year before getting the relief he wanted for them with the same tax increase.
I am sure we all noticed the tax difference at the till when we checked out as I am sure we will notice after the same tax goes back into effect.
Dusty wanting to keep his image “clean” and using a subsidiary to carry out the attacks on other candidates seems rather weak and gutless. Would this be the tactics he would use if elected? Act one way in public and have his staff or other peoples attack you for criticizing him. Maybe? Who knows but Dusty himself.
Lets be clear, politics is not for the faint of heart, but it would be nice to see Dusty stand up and actually show he has the fight in him and not let others do his dirty work. He says he has fought for South Dakotans but he can’t seem to fight his own battles in the campaign.
As for the option for counties to add to the sales tax, well is that the local control we claim we like. Let the people in Perkins, Union, Turner, Custer Spink counties etc. decide if they want the extra sales tax. The biggest issue with it is that the larger trade centers, if their counties in act the new sales tax will reap all of the reward. We all travel to the “big city” to buy at the Walmart, Target and Aldi or eat at McDonalds or Applebee’s. The Last time I checked Salem or Newell had none of these. Pick your county and small town you get the point. You still get local control, if your commissioners vote for the new tax and you don’t like it vote them out.
As for Hansen and Gov. Rhoden they should have known what they were in for when they entered the race. Just because Dusty tries to maintain a ” good guy” persona it does not mean he is above having his people use less than desirable tactics. Both, Hansen and the Governor are in this to the finish and it will not get any better. It is time for them both to tighten their belts and hang on.
