The KELOland/Emerson poll has been released, and appears to be good news for Governor Larry Rhoden, as the poll claims he’s going to blow the doors off of the upstart Toby Doeden campaign on a 2-1 basis:
The poll shows 62% of likely Republican voter would choose Rhoden, while 32% would choose Aberdeen businessman Toby Doeden. There are 7% of Republican voters still undecided. The poll has a margin of error of 4.3%.
Rhoden gained a significant amount of voters who had selected U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson in the June 2 primary. The poll shows that 95% of those who voted for Johnson in the primary indicated that they would vote for Rhoden. Only 5% indicated Doeden.
Whoof. That’s going to change the texture of the race – and potentially represents a continued hard shift back from the right.
Ultimately, whether these poll numbers hold true will depend on who shows up, as I anticipate the turnout is going to be brutally low. And the hard right supporters tend to show up whether it’s 120 degrees or 120 degrees below.
Will Doeden shift his tactics, try to appear to mainline Republicans, and quit sending out dickish text blasts, as a PAC did in his support yesterday? We’ll see.
Maybe there is a God after all.

Love this. With these kind of polling numbers, Pennington County won’t even matter. It will be a done deal and Taffy and Tonchi will still be fumbling through ballots.
Maybe Toby can promise to end all South Dakota wars, and bring down our egg prices.
Explicit endorsements aside, there are also tacit endorsements which imply support. Trump’s interactions with Larry Rhoden show they have a good relationship. So there’s that too. Trump doesn’t endorse losers, he endorses likely winners in this kind of situation.
Trump intentionally avoided Rhoden.

Words that came out of Toby’s mouth– “I will lower inflation”. The guy is an absolute idiot. But maybe he’s right! The cash he burned went into someone’s pocket, and he will burn it no more.

If he loses, he will claim he lost. The GOP will tell him he has no proof, label such claims irresponsible, then continue on loving the President. How so many of you deal with this cognitive dissonance, I will never know.

Prior to the primary, I had conversations with other Republicans about how we would be united behind the winner as long as it wasn’t Doeden.

I will always credit Larry for driving the bull out of the state senate. Stace Nelson had won his re-election race in November 2018, but I always suspected the prospect of Larry Rhoden presiding over that chamber was what prompted him to quit in December, never to return. Good job!
Larry told me in 2013 that he’d had the highest hopes for Stace when Stace had first arrived in Pierre, and Larry sounded genuinely heartbroken that things hadn’t worked out.
