Libertarian Party of South Dakota holds convention.. I guess

South Dakota Libertarians gathered this last weekend, and have offered their candidates unto South Dakota for the 2026 campaign.  And those candidates so anointed thus are..

Well.. that’s kind of anti-climactic.

  1. Most of Libertarian candidates simply run under the GOP banner – then campaign against lifelong Republicans that they label as RINOs. The four weeks will be interesting.

    1. Most “libertarian” candidates have more in common with the nationalist sect of the GOP than with the Libertarian Party. If one would use government to enforce their worldview on others, they are not a libertarian/Libertarian.

  2. Probably because the majority of them are running as republicans in order to have a better chance at winning.

  3. It is not just South Dakota either. They have taken over BPOUs and have elected candidates in other states too bringing with them total chaos far beyond cats and dogs living together.

  4. Much like the Socialist takeover of the democratic party, the Libertarians have taken over the Republican Party.
And both parties let them do it!

  5. Aw, man–they forgot about all of the Fauxpublicans running for office. I hate to see the FreeDumb Caucus’ers and their unelected whackadoodle compatriots left out of the fringe right-wing fun!

In all seriousness, my plea to my fellow South Dakotans – please, PLEASE, help keep our legislature, constitutional offices, and Congressional delegation free of the lunatic fringe (both extremes) and fill these offices with individuals possessing common sense and personal decency!!!

  6. Open primaries would have completely solved the lunatic fringe problem in BOTH parties, but neither party supported them because neither has enough common sense to seek the common good. So the Hatfields and the McCoys within and between both parties – but since Trump came along, mostly within the Republican party — will continue the ridiculous hyper-partisan feuding that feels a lot like watching The Jerry Springer Show reruns. Are any of you getting tired of so much winning yet?

  7. Is it too late for Toby Doeden to drop out of the SDGOP primary and run as the Libertarian nominee in the general? No more pretending and misleading people. He would finally run as his authentic political self. He is part of that core group of Libertarian and Constitutional Party folks up there in Brown County and across the state.

  8. Mr. Oakes, please report to us the turnout…was it obstreperous and vociferous? Was the District Numbered 30 well represented?

    1. Alas, Dear Grudz, I was unable to attend this year’s festivities as we were busy getting the family businesses up and running for the season.
