I’m sure folks believe that what happened yesterday in NY, NJ, and VA could never happen here…but those states did not just wake up that crazy, it happened slowly over time. And it always starts by electing RINOs, or Republicans who say they are conservative but are anything but, and THAT is already happening statewide in our state..

Those darn RINO’s. Damn them! But, wait a minute. I seem to recall someone in South Dakota talking about new and increased taxes recently. It must have been Taffy’s evil twin Senator TAXXY Howard who was earlier taking about income taxes in the Comprehensive Property Tax Task Force committee, and who ultimately proposed this package of tax increases on South Dakotans:

    • Increases state sales tax from 4.2% to 4.5%, which will generate $105.3 million
    • Increases contractor’s excise tax from 2.0% to 2.25%,which will generate $27.4 million
    • Increases the wholesale alcohol excise tax from 2% to 4%, which will generate $3.2 million
    • Increases alcohol beverage excise taxes by 25%, which will generate $2.3 million
    • Implements a new tax on vaping at 40%, which will generate $8.3 million
    • Increases a tobacco products excise tax from 35% to 40%, which will generate $1.7 million
    • Increases the tax mill rate on cigarettes from 76.5 to 101.5, which will generate $9.0 million
    • Utilizes 33% of the future fund revenues for property tax reduction, which will equal $8.0 million
    • Increases the tourism tax from 1.5% to 4%, which will generate $29.2 million
    • Removes the sales tax exemption for advertising services, which will generate $41.3 million
    • Removes the sales tax exemption for radio and television broadcasting, which will generate $7.2 million
    • Removes the sales tax exemption for services performed for rodeos, which will generate $1.5 million
    • Applies sales tax to mini storage, which will generate $1.5 million
    • Removes the sales tax exemption for the supply of bulk water, which will generate $7.7 million
    • Removes the sales tax exemption for membership fees to organizations, which will generate $9.3 million
    • Removes the sales tax exemption for social services and credit counseling services, which will generate $12.0 million
    • Removes the tax credit to insurance companies for giving money to educational scholarships, which will generate $5.0 million
    • Reduces general fund expenditures by 5.07%

  1. I get the giggles when people like Laffy Taffy talk about national things whilst serving in the STATE legislator and refusing to handle what’s going on HERE at home. How about sticking to issues at home and focusing on your job in the legislature. mmmkay?

  4. It’s exhausting to listen to these nut bags call anyone that doesn’t goose step in line with their radical ideology, a RINO.
    The ultra conservative bunch in Pierre are not Republican as I know it. The state and country would be much better off if both sides were to look back a few decades at what real statesman and woman looked like.

  6. Legislators in Taffy’s camp were literally doing victory laps on social media last year when voting down a 1 percent sales tax raise last session and saving us all from the largest tax raise in South Dakota history. Now she proposes this list? Oh my.

Until folks realize that our tax burden in South Dakota is one of the lowest in the nation when looking at actual and factual numbers like tax per burden per average household income, tax burden per capita GDP. The Legislature has chosen to place much of the burden on property owners. Taffy and the Legislators want their sheep angry at schools, municipalities and counties. It’s all part of their plan when really they have the most ability to affect property taxes with decisions they make at the Legislature. My biggest frickin gripe is transplant retirees who roll in from states with income taxes, high sales tax, estate taxes, etc and then start bitching about their property taxes and disparaging schools, counties, fire, etc. These are Taffy’s sheep and all she does is try to play to their emotions. It’s sad.

  8. Our most beloved Bill Janklow raised taxes from 1994 to 1999 in order to pay for property tax cuts – solid precedence and historical recognition of the need to shift tax burdens when property taxes get out of whack.

    It’s how we manage to reduce property taxes when they get too high and also manage to avoid an income tax.

    If Bill did it and it worked back then, we can do it now.

    1. Agree 100 percent. Although if Bill were alive and in charge today, the “We the People” crowd would probably refer to him as a RINO or Crony Capitalist.
