POET and Summit Carbon Solutions Announce Carbon Capture Partnership
Partnership will incorporate 17 POET plants, capture 4.7 million metric tons of CO2
AMES AND SIOUX FALLS (Monday, January 29) — In a major step forward for the future of agriculture and biofuels, POET and Summit Carbon Solutions (Summit) announced a groundbreaking partnership connecting the world’s largest biofuel producer with the world’s largest carbon capture and storage project. This collaboration brings together two entities—both founded upon creating new agricultural markets and supporting rural communities—to capture the value of the biogenic CO2 from the bioethanol production process.
The partnership strategically expands the carbon opportunity across the Midwest by incorporating POET’s 12 facilities in Iowa and five facilities in South Dakota into the Summit project. This addition will facilitate the capture, transportation, and permanent storage of 4.7 million metric tons of CO2 annually from the 17 POET bioprocessing plants.
“POET is excited to partner with Summit Carbon Solutions on this historic project,” said Jeff Broin, POET Founder and CEO. “As the world seeks low-carbon energy solutions, carbon capture ensures that ag-based biofuels will remain competitive for decades to come. This is a tremendous opportunity to bring value to farmers, bioethanol producers, and rural communities and counties in participating states, and I believe it will unleash even more opportunities for ag and bioprocessing in the future.”
“Today marks a historic day for American agriculture and biofuels,” said Bruce Rastetter, Founder and Executive Chairman of Summit Agricultural Group. “POET is the largest bioethanol producer in the world, and their partnership with Summit Carbon Solutions ensures that decarbonizing bioethanol will lead to exciting new market opportunities for producers, rural economies, and American energy security.”
“Our partnership with POET is creating new economic opportunities in agriculture,” said Lee Blank, CEO of Summit Carbon Solutions. “This initiative is aimed at enhancing the financial profitability of our farmers, contributing to higher land values, and ensuring a more prosperous future for farm families and communities. Our focus is on tangible benefits that directly support the backbone of our nation’s agricultural industry.”
The timeline for the addition of these plants is strategically planned. The plants in South Dakota will be included in the upcoming state application, ensuring a streamlined integration into Summit’s existing project framework. Meanwhile, for the plants in Iowa, separate applications will be filed, acknowledging the unique requirements and opportunities in each state. This structured approach allows Summit to efficiently expand our project scope while adhering to local regulations and needs.

Today, POET holds more than 100 patents worldwide and continues to break new ground in biotechnology, yielding lower-carbon, more efficient renewable energy and bioproducts.
So we’re just gonna choke out all the trees now?!?
CO2 levels are at the highest in human history, sequestration is simply removing the excess CO2 that natural carbon sinks cannot process in a timely fashion so as to prevent a runaway greenhouse effect.
If you were literate and knew/understood biology, ecology, chemistry, etc, then you would know this.
So you dump it into the ground and leave it to the next general to deal with it or more likely there will be leaks in the storage or some other type of disaster.
No, not really. If you give CO2 enough time it will eventually react with various minerals and precipitate various carbonate solids. If you add in heat, pressure, or both as in the sequestration process, the precipitation process speeds up from decades to years. And if the microbes that were just discovered at the Homestake lab are all they’re cracked up to be, it’ll take even less for the CO2 to be as permanently inert as it will ever be.
Kudzu can save the planet.
Not really fair to label someone as being illiterate! Maybe they have a different perspective as in they actually live off of the land and see things that you don’t see ie a taking of the land for someone’s gain. Landowners have a unique perspective to actual see the bigger picture!
You don’t need to own land to see that the claim sequestration will choke trees is ridiculous.
You…… you realize, and I could be mistaken in your meaning, but you do realize trees breath carbon-dioxide, yeah?
CO2 is not a risk! These are statements made by Dr Happer and Dr Lindzen. See below link for further details and their credentials..
The Scientific Method Proves There Is No Risk That Fossil Fuels and Carbon Dioxide Will Cause Catastrophic Warming and Extreme Weather.
• All of the models that predict catastrophic global warming fail the key test of the scientific method: they grossly overpredict the warming versus actual data.
• 600 million years of data prove that today’s CO2 level of 420 parts per million (ppm) is very low, not high.
• 600 million years of data show that higher levels of CO2 do not cause or even correlate with higher temperatures.
• Even at today’s relatively low levels, atmospheric CO2 is now “heavily saturated,” in physics terms, meaning that additional increases in atmospheric CO2 can have little warming effect.

Good job posting nothing more than an unreviewed opinion piece from an organization that is funded by climate change deniers and the petroleum industry. Harper has gone on record saying that none of his beliefs on CO2 can be peer-reviewed and he’s acting purely out of self-interest.
some of the most careful and cautious climate researchers are concerned about greater than normal change rates in key global temperature data; some say we have maybe only a 20 year window to get a handle on contributing factors or (as trump would say) “ ding ding ding ding ding ding whooosh kaboom”
“funded by climate change deniers and the petroleum industry”
Now that’s some certified left-wing talking-points garbage right there. In Deadwood they’d call that the “tell” on the real agenda behind this whole crazy boondoggle. Hope people wake up in time.
If you knew how to read you could look up the history of the CO2 Coalition and see that it’s a splinter group obsessed with CO2 from the old George Marshal think tan. But why let facts get in the way of what ever passes your two brain cells as a good idea.
Odie has no credibility. Keep up the good work of failing your constituents. How many bills has Odenbach been able to pass while in Pierre. Zero.
So they finally offered Broin a fat enough check huh.
Summit desperately needs a new public relations/campaign strategy. Just from reading these comments, its clear they have done a poor job providing simple answers to basic questions about the pipeline: What are the risks? Why is this the best way? Why is it needed? How does everyone benefit?
Their opponents have a clear advantage in the messaging now. Unless a reversal happens, PUC will not stick their neck out and approve a pipeline.
They can’t explain the benefits because the main benefit is money in their pockets which is a bit hard to defend.
Give me your rebuttals of the points presented by CO2 coalition. Attacking the messenger is not useful.
The most easily dismissed argument that the coalition’s opinion tries to make is the CO2 saturation claim. They are using flawed data from a flawed experiment that was performed in 1902 (fella by the name of Knut Angstrom). He made various claims about gaseous saturation points in Earths atmosphere that were debunked in the 1950’s thanks to all of the upper atmospheric research that was done in WWII. It’s as bad of an argument as claiming that vaccines cause autism. It shows that the Coalition is arguing in bad faith at best and manipulative hacks at worst.
You want better data that’s peer reviewed and actually uses modern data? Here’s a nice write up from the American Institute of Physics and not from a partisan slopshop:
