Rounds Issues Statement on Indictment of Former President

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) issued the following statement on the indictment of the former president:

“Regardless of your political position or perspective, this prosecution should concern everyone. The integrity of our justice system has been called into question because of a politically-motivated district attorney who is bringing charges that the Department of Justice declined to prosecute. The indictment includes 34 counts of falsifying business records for allegations of activity that occurred more than six years ago. Despite the fact these charges are normally misdemeanor charges, the district attorney, in his indictment, is attempting to bootstrap multiple underlying crimes in order to elevate these charges to a felony level. While everyone, including the former president, is subject to the laws of this country, no one should be singled out for political purposes. Unfortunately, this soap opera of a prosecution appears to be just that.”

  1. a clear positive benefit of a press release like this is to send a signal to democrats and others that the republican party isn’t about to take partisan driven crap from anyone.

i’m glad senator rounds and others who’ve been in office since back when trump was still a registered democrat, are in a place, and of a mind, to put the republican party first. i continue to wish we had someone of rounds’ peerage in charge of the gop, and running for president. trump ain’t it people.

  2. You’re right enquirer. Give Trump a loving cup for cutting taxes, and realize his personality has painted himself into a corner that he cannot escape from. There are plenty of great candidates in the GOP. Let’s move on.

    1. Rounds is done after this term or he never would’ve said that stuff about the election being NOT stolen straight to the faces of the crazies who believe it.

  3. it’s really seventeen years too late. we’ve been gliding around looking for the softest crash landing for that long. it is way worse than even you can think.

  4. One can hardly be less connected to reality when they say Rounds is done. Rounds is the proverbial workhorse doing the hard work every day and not a show horse who screams about issues that there is no chance of passing in todays realities of a Democrat President. Mike leaves that to Senators who have no desire to actually have compliments. This is from the most recent ranking of all Senators a few months ago. He is actually the safest of the big four.

    4. Sen. Mike Rounds (R) of South Dakota
    > Popularity: 61% approve, 28% disapprove
    > Current term ends: 2027
    > Nov. 2020 voter participation in South Dakota: 57.7% (9th lowest)
    > 2021 state unemployment: 3.1%

  5. Yes, DOJ declined to prosecute but it seems that the last, major reason may be that they decided orange guy’s lack of understanding of campaign finance would have made it too difficult to prove his intent. It’s up to Bragg to prove that orange guy was trying to defraud the state of New York when he approved classification of his hush money payments as business expenses.

    1. How did he do anything to defraud the state of New York? Serious question I am sure you can’t answer.

(BTW Trump used personal funds and didn’t take any tax deductions (NY or US) so the only reason it qualifies as “business expense” is Trump kept books on his personal expenses. You really need to get a clue before you speak.)

      1. Well, we’ll see what comes out in the proving of all those counts that begin with the words “with intent to defraud.” But you believe the line that it was “personal funds,” since it was the Trump Organization writing all those checks, some of which he signed himself? Again, we’ll see what comes.
