Rhoden for Governor Responds to Toby’s Attacks with “Toby Tax” Ad
Pierre, SD – Today, the Rhoden for Governor campaign responded to Toby Doeden’s attacks with a new “Toby Tax” ad.
“Larry Rhoden delivered the largest property tax cut in South Dakota history – reducing property taxes 30% or more,” the ad states. “Toby Doeden’s plan blows a $1.8 billion hole in the state budget.”
The ad points out that the fiscal hole created by Doeden’s plan would gut funding for education, roads, police officers, and firefighters. Doeden’s plan would also create a $500,000 tax windfall for himself.
The only way to pay for Doeden’s plan would be to double the sales tax or impose a new state income tax. Governor Larry Rhoden has signed a pledge to not support any new taxes.
“A half-million for Doeden – a new Toby Tax for us,” the ad concludes.

Property taxes are unconstitutional. The founding fathers went to war for much less. Don’t understand how people can hate someone for trying to get rid of them. Cut spending and taxes and everyone wins.
Then stop driving on public roads, sending your kids to public schools, don’t call the police when someone breaks into your home, don’t call the fire department when your house is on fire,don’t use the public library then

Doubt he knows. He probably heard it from Toby along with Toby’s past whining about paying taxes and past posts that taxation is theft.
Property taxes are not unconstitutional. That’s not why we fought a revolution. This statement is as reckless as the Toby Tax. Good ad. Best part? It’s honest. Rhoden isn’t hiding behind a PAC. If he’s got something to say, he’ll put his name on it!

Rhoden is in over his head. The establishment backed Dusty. When Dusty lost, the same people who trashed Rhoden in the primary jumped on his campaign, but they expect to run his office. Larry may win, but at what cost.

I do worry that bragging about reducing property taxes by 30% is not going to age well. Property taxes are going up because the property values are going up. That’s your local Board of Equalization at work, they decided your house is worth more than it used to be.
It doesn’t matter what comes out of Pierre if homes in your neighborhood are selling for twice what they were selling for a few years ago or even last year. Go to zillow.com and enter your address, it will give you an estimate; you don’t have to have it listed for sale for it to show up on zillow . My home is estimated at 10X what I paid for it 32 years ago

If Rhoden were polling that well, Trump would have endorsed him. Instead, Trump didn’t even meet publicly with him during the president’s visit to Mount Rushmore.
Trump’s waiting to see if Doeden will try to buy the endorsement with a large cash gift. Doeden has done nothing for Trump yet but come up with his hand out asking for things. That’s not the Art of The Deal.

Considering how tax returns usually work out for farmers and ranchers (buy enough equipment to have your bonus depreciation wipe out your income) they would prefer an income tax over property taxes because they would come out ahead.
Toby was the only one in the primary who wasn’t attacked & was the only reason he placed high. He hasn’t done ‘ANYTHING’ at all for South Dakota. He likes to sling mud & lies like he has about Rhoden, but now he’s going crazy because someone ‘dared’ to expose the truth about his TDBS promises that will destroy our state. The last ad was a ‘contrast ad’ stating the truth. He’s a spoiled millionaire whose used to getting his way with his used salesman spins. “He can turn a sale faster than anyone I’ve ever seen” says a former employee. “But he’d be a terrible governor.” He could sell an ice-cream cone to the devil.
Actions speak louder than words. The large majority of SD voters are not falling for his empty promises. Larry Rhoden’s actual service to community, church, and state is stellar. Doden lacks any kind of service except to himself. Just look back to see where they’ve been and that’s what we’ll get in the future.

To be fair, Satan probably likes iced cream so that doesn’t seem like a tough sell. grudznick is not Satanist but I do know some witches. They like the iced cream too. The reality here is that Mr. Doeden is just a known and flagrant douche and now that the is asked to stand behind his bogus claims it becomes evident.
Many of us could be millionaires or multi-millionaires if we had no scruples. are sociopaths and pathological liars. These are choices we make.
God help us if this idiot fools enough voters to win. The vast majority of those Doeden voters are going to regret it and further lose faith in our political system.

The first post in this thread from Glen is the perfect example of the false-promise vote-buying nutjobbery that’s being discussed – total elimination of property taxes of Doeden gets your vote.
If you elect Doeden you will deserve to suffer from whatever he does or fails to do. Don’t do it.
I notice Florida is touting this “eliminate property taxes” thing. You should read up on how it gets implemented.
First, Florida is like SD in having no state income tax. Florida is UNLIKE SD in having a population base 24 times bigger than SD.
Florida’s proposal, not enacted yet, only eliminates property taxes for state residents for their primary dwelling. Commercial landlord/slumlords, business property owners, and out of staters buying a vacation home or second home in Florida won’t get their property tax eliminated.
Florida hasn’t implemented the approved plan yet, they haven’t worked out how to make up the revenue shortfalls, but an economy 24 times bigger than ours I’m sure has a lot of things they can do.
Here, what will this kind of thing mean for SD – will the state renounce the state’s portion and leave counties and schools to keep collecting? Exactly what does that save? Rhoden says Doeden’s plan punches a billion-dollar-hole in always-tight state finances. We already do tricks to make up revenue shortfalls, where does THAT come from?
I’d keep watching Florida instead of Doeden campaign ads for answers on eliminating taxes.
