    1. I think Trump was the SD Republican establishment’s last choice for President. They were big Bush and Rubio supporters. The people, not the politicians got behind Trump.

        1. You can’t fool me Dave. Bush was your boy. You lost so you had no other choice then to support Trump because Trump destroyed all your good men.

  1. There were a few of us hoping former Governor John Kasich would run in the primary. There needs to be some reasonable alternatives to Trump on the R side. Opportunity is there.

      1. I was considered crazy when I supported Trump from the beginning. I am referring to many of my Republican friends. Remember how Ann Coulter got laughed at and bomb blasted? Even Thune and Daugaard asked him to step down. I don’t consider Trump a Republican. That was just his best chance to get elcted to the White House. Right now I am going going with Trump unless Jesse jumps in.

  2. Not that it’s any of my business as a non-Republican (as I’m sure someone will snarkily point out if I don’t), but isn’t it kind of sketchy of a political party to endorse an incumbent when there are primary challengers?

    1. Gideon, are you saying Lora Hubbel is running for POTUS as a Republican next year?
She’s the only person I can think of crazy enough to try it.

  3. Former Gov. Bill Weld has formally announced, and I’ve heard talk that Former Sens. John Kasich and Bob Corker are both considering it. Then there’s always the specter of good ol’ Sen. Mitt Romney lurking in the wings, if not as a candidate, as a backer and/or adviser.

Anyway, even if it’s a foregone conclusion that President Trump will get the nomination, it just seems like a major breach of decorum to endorse a candidate prior to convention, let alone primaries.

      1. Weld left the party to be the libertarian VP…and Trump has a 90%+ rating among Republicans…Weld is Hubbel esque..running but not credible

        1. @John – I certainly wasn’t debating his chances, rather the ethics of a pre-primary endorsement, which, I hate to disagree with my friend Mr. Beal, a sponsored watch party is a de facto endorsement when it’s organized by the party. Litmus test: Will they sponsor a watch party for Weld’s kickoff? Or Kasich’s?

  4. So you are saying people are crazy for not giving up on their community, state or country by running for office numerous times? If you lose an athletic event, should you quit? If you get turned downed for a job, should you quit looking? If you relapse with drugs or alcohol, should you quit trying to get clean? If you fall away from your faith should you not come to the cross? If you don’t get into med school should you quit trying? Sorry, but a quitter never wins.

  5. Romney??? After his antics and statements anti Trump he will never be an advisor let alone candidate. He had his chance against Obama and didn’t try very hard. Since then he has not missed a chance to diss Trump.

    1. I think that’s kind of a nearsighted thing to say, considering how easily he won a US Senate seat in one of the reddest states in the union. We haven’t seen the last from Mr. Romney.

      1. Even nearsighted people can see across the state line into Iowa and notice nobody else has shown up. Even though they scrapped the straw poll in 2015, the caucuses are less than 8 months away.

  6. If Romney would have been as hard on Obama as he was on Trump, Mitt would have been president. He had a great first debate and then folded.

  7. Romney showed his lack of leadership when he let the moderator by in the Presidential debate.

  8. Having been involved with Democratic Party politics for about 20 yrs.; I predict that if Trump is successful at nearly building the Wall, He will win 30% of Democratic
party voters. While they will never admit voting Republican, A great plurality have nothing in common with liberal elites.
