SOS Candidate Baxter in Brookings on Friday. Bring your questions, get free donuts & coffee.

According to an e-mail sent out by my local Republican County group, Secretary of State candidate Heather Baxter will be in Brookings on Friday to meet & greet. And I’m sure as a candidate, she’ll also answer questions about her campaign and platform at the Bible Baptist Church from 9-11 AM.

I have to work for a living, so no. I can’t be there. I work on insurance claims, and there is probably less mayhem dealing with dog bite claims, falling tree limbs and exploding propane tanks.

But you can certainly go and ask her if Rick Weible will be her Director of Elections if she wins? Or if she’s going to persist on the hand-counting thing, despite what county auditors want? I’m sure members of the public and media could find other questions to ask her as well.

It’s not a GOP only thing, and is open to the public.

  1. Hand counting is the best way. For thousands of years, humans have been proving themselves as infallible, honest and trustworthy.

    1. By all means. Let’s replace audited tabulation systems with Karen, Dave, and Steve after six hours in a folding chair and two pots of church basement coffee

    2. Yeah right trust hand counters. So at the precinct you have all Heather supporters they could cheat by saying Heather when really it was for another candidate. Let’s be real this group of people will be cheating and unless they get caught all the crazies will make office. She will say that she will leave it up to the Auditors but clearly she is a huge supporter as she went TWICE and spoke on hand counting in Pennington. She is a joke and this might be the first time I will vote for her Democrat. He has spoke many times he is against hand counting.

  2. Just remember, she can request that elections can be hand counted but at the end of the day, the South Dakota Legislature has to vote to approve that.

I can’t Governor Rhoden will be full support of this.

Event the Save America Act has no signs that they would be in favor of hand counting.

  3. At the Pennington County Cracker Barrels, Baxter was the most inarticulate legislator to speak. She was NOT re-elected to the house from Dist 34 yet the wingnuts have her running for Secretary of State. Absolutely mind numbing that the system is so weak to this nonsense.

    1. District 34 voters looked at Heather Baxter and said, “No thanks.” The convention system looked at the exact same candidate and said, “Secretary of State sounds about right.”

If you ever wondered why people question the convention process, this is Exhibit A.

  4. Missing the days of normal Secretary of States: Chris Nelson, Joyce Hazeltine, even Jason Gant. Respectfully, I long for the old days when “R” in Republican meant “Reasonable and Responsible” rather than the derogatory “R” word, which Ms. Baxter and Mr. Weible seem to be.

    1. Once Gant was pushed out of office, the position became the SD equivalent of Hogwarts’ Defense Against the Dark Arts…

      1. We were super lucky Monae caught a streak of “let’s do the job correctly” and did the job in front of her. We are all properly grateful.

  5. A looney delegate said she voted for Heather because “she’ll do the things Monae promised to do but didn’t do.”
I told her “she couldn’t do a lot of those things , because they were illegal,”

Opposition candidates need to point out when candidates promise to break the law.

      1. I just heard a story last night (so let’s say it’s a rumor, and take it as one) that shortly after she took office, a group showed up demanding that she fire everybody who worked there and hire the people they had selected.
When she told them she couldn’t fire everybody, the office needed people who know what they are doing, they got mad at her. They had additional demands that she do things which were illegal.

Perhaps somebody (like a member of the press) could follow up on this story, get some verification and provide us with names. There’s likely a good news story there.

  6. Lookit Heather B up in that picture, all shiny and smiley! She is ready to be the Bari Weiss of the county election world.

  7. It’s amusing to me, people want to complain about the process. They know how to get people nominated and elected through the processes in place yet complain about the outcome of the process that has been in place forever. Sounds like a bunch of whining losers. Democrats do this kind of thing. Republicans unite those around them and elect other candidates. It’s been fun to watch the loonies on here though. Playing victim when you lose is crazy.

    1. Claiming the GOP candidate selection is a “process” is much more amusing than any imagined crybaby behavior you detect among the not-MAGA.
I don’t know what the future of the Republican Party will be after the feckless performance of the GOP congressional majority since 2022, but in this state the Republicans won’t have a resurgence until they pry open the cockpit door and drive out the MAGA without crashing like Flight 93.

      1. The convention process has to end to protect the majority of the people from those insaner than most. The nomination and likely election of Lance Russell and Heather Baxter will hasten that end.

          1. Grudznick is correct. Only a handful of states still nominate any statewide candidates at conventions.
            Statewide primaries are the norm

      2. Comparing the Republican process to an act of terrorism is just the extremest views that the terrorist had. Vilify those that you don’t agree with so your actions are justified and your hate is seen as “rational “ not MAGA is your trigger term attempting to claim the sane viewpoint, yet contradicting that throughout your entire post. You’re no better or worse than those you hate, you only think you are.

        1. All terror is a form of strong-arm force, just like the gate-flooding that swamped the GOP convention a few years ago in the name of wingnut – hand-counting nut-jobbery crammed down from on high.
That stunt laid bare the flaws and weaknesses of THE HONOR SYSTEM. A few years ago, before Trump, we all managed to abide by the agreement to honor structures and practices which proved themselves over time to support the best most deliberate government.
Here in the Trump era, we have only had the violation and disregard for that honor system, that promise we all previously made to each other, that we would all be governed by laws and not by men. So yeah, that ship has obviously sailed, as your smug lying glib insults reveal to us.
So yeah. I’ll call you out. Democrats PLUS Republicans constitute the vast majority of citizens, and it takes all to decide and move forward as a nation. Your ripping lying destruction of Democrats is the fulcrum of the lever that keeps us forced hard right, in gold and chintz oligarchy. It’s all distortion and untruth.

          1. I said you vilify whoever you disagree with so your hate reads as rational, and your rebuttal was to call me a smug glib liar, compare my party to terrorism a second time, and announce that the rules no longer apply to you because someone else broke them first. I couldn’t have written a better demonstration if you’d let me ghostwrite it. ‘Governed by laws and not by men’ is a strange banner to wave while explaining why you’re personally exempt.

            1. Oh to be a guilt-free innocent lamb such as yourself. Yet your teeth and claws are showing. You sticking to your untruths and distortions is a more perfect expose than any critique of YOU that one could write.

  8. Again, we should thank Monae Johnson for doing the job and doing it well, amid the fears that she might not, given the supporters who put her in place. May this happy turnaround happen for every public servant who finds a rift between their personal politics and the job of serving all the people.
