From KELOland News, State Auditor Rich Sattgast and his staff have put state agencies on notice to get pre-approval on promotional items and training events, as opposed to submitting the expenses after the fact:

Finance officers throughout South Dakota state government have received notice that they will need prior approval from the office of State Auditor Rich Sattgast before spending any public dollars for employees’ or non-employees’ meals or refreshments that exceed state per diem rates, or for hosting conferences or training events, or for recruiting and promotional items.

and..

“We want to work with state employees. We don’t want to hang them out to dry. But we are the watchdog of state tax dollars,” she added.

And before some of you start, this has been going on for decades. So, it’s a useful reminder for agencies to ask before they make plans to buy those water bottles.. or plan on serving jumbo shrimp cocktail for an event as one department did when I was in state government 30 some years ago.

  1. Very glad to see the Auditor’s Office cracking down on this. Monae Johnson certainly has used departmental money to purchase promotional items for herself. (It could be argued they are campaign items since they promote her personally.) There definitely is a better use for taxpayer dollars.

    1. Daugaard was great in his promotion of SD when recruiting MN residents. I can’t imagine a better person to promote that goal than the governor. I would also say Noem excelled at Freedom works here and Haeder excels at returning unclaimed property. Jackley builds confidence and trust with consumer protection ads on a weekly basis.

Why is the state spending millions of dollars on lottery promotion and tourism? Because it works.

    1. Sattgast is really hitting his stride. When they crack down on Monae’s monogrammed pens and Haeder’s commercials in his 16th year it will be the capstone of his gubernatorial launch.

  2. It’s 2024 people. We don’t communicate through newspapers or books. It’s all video that’s consumed.

Noem’s SD Works here which cost over ten million dollars.

And by the way has been very successful. Her ads have recruited a lot of people to SD. I commend anyone who makes an effort to interact with people through media and video. Good for Noem, Rhoden, Daugaard, Rounds, Janklow, Haeder, Sattgast, Johnson, Barnett, Jackley, Brunner, Larson, Greenfield, Fiegen, Nelson, Hansen, Johnson etc who communicate with those they are trying to reach.

Newspapers are dead. Everything is video based or electronic.

  3. I like newspapers very much for in depth reporting on issues and priorities in government, Federal, state, and local. Electronic media certainly has a role in communication but newspapers are the history of record. We will be poorer, less informed, more at the mercy of our own prejudices and vices if Newspapers pass away and we are left only with the flickering screen.
